Solved Windows Server 2003 R2 recieving "Generic host process for Win32 services encountered a problem and needs to close" generic host Posted on 2008-12-05 Windows Server 2003 Windows XP 1 Verified Solution 2 Comments 9,641 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-05 We started recieving the error message "Generic host process for Win32 services encountered a problem and needs to close" on our server and also clients computers. The services for "server" and "workstation" apparently chosen to change from started automatically to manual start in which we now have to manually change this generic host process every time we reboot. This also seems to be affecting users drive mappings as these services are being turned off on their own. There seems to be no connection between the users computers that are being affected by this problem (users are using XP Pro). I have attached the error log txt that was generated by the crash if that is of any help. The files were taken from our Windows Server 2003 R2. Any help or direction to resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated. are several reasons to produce the system error message mainly on XP. Considering your O/S is XP SP2 or XP SP3 I am writing the solutions. You may apply One method, or may also can apply Two or More Method for fix your system here. I am discribing one by one: Method One: Scan your system by Trojen Removal software completely. Also scan your system by regular antivirus software like Macfee with latest updated database. Best is disassemble your HDD from your system and attach this on other good system and scan their your HDD with other updated antivirus PC. Method Two: 1. Go to start > run. type regedit and press enter. 2. [Close Port 445:] Now navigate to the following entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters In the right side you will see an entry named “TransportBindName”, delete the original value to give a blank value. 3.[Close Port 135:] Once its done, now navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE In the right side, you will find a key named “EnableDCOM”, modify it from Y to N. 4. Now close the registry and restart the computer for changes. Method Three: TCP/IP stack repair method for use with Windows XP: Start > Run > type CMD (to open a command prompt). in CMD type : netsh winsock reset catalog (Reset WINSOCK entries to installation default) and then type : netsh int ip reset c:\logfile.txt (Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults) Method Four: Install WinPatrol Registry Entry & System Change Monitor from here Download. Download the FREE version and install. This will inform you any registry change. If need deny just do. Method Five: Microsoft Way (Hotfix information) For Windows XP SP2, the Generic Host Process error can potentially occur on any system at any time. Although you receive the error message shortly after system startup, the actual error occurred during the previous system shutdown. Because of the broad nature of this issue, this hotfix was made available through Windows Update and distributed to users who have Automatic Updates enabled to eliminate this problem on Windows XP SP2 systems. For Windows XP SP2, you may experience one last Generic Host Process error upon restart after you install this hotfix. This is from the previous system shutdown before the new version installation was completed. For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows 2000, this hotfix is only intended to correct the problems that are described in this article. Only apply this hotfix to systems that are experiencing this specific problem
