Old drive seems to be a dud but when I error 0176- ibm thinkpad install a new drive I get a error 174 (configuration error). What am I missing to install a new drive? Drive I am replacing is a 2G IBM. Drive I am trying is a 2G Toshiba. I also tried a 3G IBM - http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-95/error-174-on-ibm-thinkpad-380d/170311.html always error 174. All drives are OK in my 600 (except the one we are trying to replace) any help for me? Make sure you have installed the drive properly in the caddy and didn't put the flex cable http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=3214 on wrong. 2. Make sure that you have a good connection in the 760EL. It's common to not have the drive properly seated. You might want to try putting in the drive with the flex cable from the caddy without the rest of the caddy for troubleshooting purposes. 3. Go into Easy Setup (press F1 while turning on the computer) and go into diagnostics (ambulance icon) and see if the drive is actually identified. Hope this helps some. _________________Bruce GuttmanCurrent stable: 770Z, 600X, T23, R40, R52, T43p, X41, R60, T60 (2007-83U), T61 (6460-DWU), X61 (7675-59U), X61 T (7762-H7u); T400 (2768-EK9); plus an Intellistation M 6219.New Project: [T420] Top Profile Reply with quote RandyRadioActive Post subject: Possible cable fault?PostPosted: Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:01 am Offline Joined: Thu Aug 26, 2004 6:47 pm Posts: 2 Hi Bruce, Thanks for the post. I am not able to enter setup with the new drive(s) installed. I do the F1 hold on power up and all I get is error "00174" > "OK" "Cancel" < With no hard drive present, I can enter setup. With the "dud" drive installed, I can enter setup and setup shows no hard drive is present. With new drive installed, and after pressing "OK" on the error 174 screen, I get I999035 in the top left side of the screen - "no bootable device." Do you think I have a defective drive cable? If so, where can I get one? Randy Top Profile Reply with quote Display posts from previous: All pos

It might just want to be retired! :-) Its been a while, but I think 174 is a hard drive error, which, due to its age might be expected. You might be able to order a new drive for it, but as for the data on it... gohabs View Public Profile Find all posts by gohabs #3 December 26th, 2006, 09:29 PM sharjen New Member Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 7 Im Really Not ibm thinkpad error Worried About The Data,i Havent Long Bought It From Gumtree,i Looked Over It For A Couple Of Days Then It Was Just Sitting There For A Couple Of Weeks And I Turned It On And Thats What I Got!how Much Do You Recon A New Drive Would Be???? sharjen View Public Profile Find all posts by sharjen #4 December 26th, 2006, 09:39 PM gohabs New Member Join Date: Oct 2006 O/S: Windows XP Pro Location: Boston Posts: 18 With XP, you'll want at least a 4gb drive, and then depending on what you'll use it for more. But a drive can cost between $50-$80. I would not get anything bigger than a 20gb drive for the 600E though, it was a good machine in its time, but its getting old and the rest of the components will start to go unless youre gentle with it. Depending on the machine type listed under the laptop... this place has drives, can't speak for their "integrity" though, never used them: http://www.kahlon.com/result.asp?modelid=10544 I had XP on mine too, but its just chugs away on the slow 256mb ram. Might be good just for email and surfing. Good luck! gohabs View Public Profile Find all posts by gohabs #5 December 26th, 2006, 10:07 PM sharjen New Member Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 7 ok thanks for your help sharjen View Public Profile Find all posts by sharjen Bookmarks Digg del.
