Install Kristinn Didriksson February 11, 2014 0 I encountered an interesting 404 error after doing a fresh install of WordPress for a client on GoDaddy shared hosting. The install http://www.webmasterfu.com/2014/02/interesting-404-error-wordpress-install/ was an update to a plain HTML site that I had done many years earlier. The work consisted mainly of updating the previous pages to WordPress. The initial installation went fine. I http://baltimoredrew.com/wordpress-permalinks-404-godaddy/ proceeded to change the permalinks to an SEO friendly scheme, and then I began to add pages. Once I had created the basic pages, such as About, Contact and the like, internal server I added them to the menu and published the menu. I tested the links and, lo and behold, I got a 404 error for each of the new pages. For those not familiar with the 404 error, it means that the page was not found. Was It A Server Issue? My first thoughts was that there was something wrong with the server. If this was 500 internal server a WordPress problem, then it would be the same for 75+ million websites across the globe. I called GoDaddy and they insisted that there was no problem with the server. Then, I did a Google search to see if there were any similar experiences out there. What I came across was reports that similar problems occurred when mod-rewrite was not installed on the Apache web server. I called GoDaddy back and had them check the server. They told me (after taking a lot of heat) that the server was correctly configured. Taking A Second Look At this point I was at a loss. I reinstalled WordPress and tried again. After encountering the same problem, I took a deep breath. I poked around in WordPress and noticed the sample page that is automatically created during a WordPress install. I put it in the menu, and the link worked! This indicated that the problem was not with the server (mod-rewrite was working )and brought me back to WordPress as the main culprit. The next step I took was to add some pages with different names, not pages that had existed on t
on GoDaddy February 2, 2015 By Drew Poland 2 Comments Searching Google for solutions to this oddball problem didn't seem too helpful unless you spent quite a bit of time looking into it or are tech savvy enough to decode what most people are saying about WordPress permalink issues on GoDaddy hosting. So maybe this post will help, as this was the only solution I found that actually solved my issue. I had a fresh install of WordPress on a GoDaddy hosting account and encountered an issue where internal links weren't working, and only taking me to a GoDaddy 404 page. A really old post on the WordPress support forums led me to try overriding their 404 page via .htaccess. It worked! Assuming you have no changes to your .htaccess file and are having this issue, you might try replacing your htaccess with the following: Then re-save your WordPress Permalinks and hopefully.. voila!
