However; there is nothing showing up in the Application Event Log where I would expect to see a (more) detailed description of the entry. How can I go about diagnosing this issue? iis-7.5 windows-event-log 500-error asp.net-mvc share|improve this question edited Jul 16 '12 at 7:55 asked Jul 15 '12 at 21:25 Greg B 4893825 I've had the exact same issue here. In my experience, if the event log is empty than the request wasn't correctly routed to the worker process. In one of our recent deployments we saw the app work intermittently with about 50% of the requests randomly failing with the 500 error and nothing in the logs. I suspect something is going wrong with the AppDomain unload that occurs after deployment. Out of curiosity, are you running antivirus in your production environment? Does an IIS reset solve the issue (until the next deployment)? –ShadowChaser Feb 21 '13 at 16:17 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 23 down vote accepte

Problems like poor performance on internal server some requests, or authentication-related failures on other requests, or the server 500 error from ASP or ASP.NET can often be difficult to troubleshoot--unless you have captured the trace of the problem when it occurs. the following article discusses failed request tracing on IIS Server. For information about doing this with Windows Azure Web Sites click here Failed-request tracing is designed to buffer the trace events for a internal server error request and only flush them to disk if the request "fails," where you provide the definition of "failure". If you want to know why you're getting 404.2 error messages or request start hanging, use failed-request tracing. The tasks that are illustrated in this article include: Enabling the failed-request tracing module Configuring failed-request tracing log-file semantics Defining the URL for which to keep failed request traces, including failure definitions and areas to trace Generating the failure condition and viewing the resulting trace Prerequisites Install IIS You must install IIS 7 or above before you can perform the tasks in this article. Browse to http://localhost/ to see if IIS is installed. If IIS is not installed, see Installing IIS on Windows Server 2008 for installation instructions.
