I just spent a few hours troubleshooting this and I hope I can help save more hours of the same for others. I looked this up and found a lot of false leads then I came up with a solution which fixes this for me on my server, so I'll list it all here and hopefully people can add to it if I miss anything. Also if my fix falls apart after a while I can post it back here

and see if we can all go back and review the steps and at least have a list of what works and what doesn't work. So this is how it started for me: I just installed PHP 5.3 on my production server Windows 2008 32-bit, I got the download msi installer from http://windows.php.net/download/ the VC9 Non-Thread safe version. I set everything up with the php.ini fine and it worked fine. But after about an hour using WordPress 2.8.2 I kept getting 500 Internal Server Errors and the detailed description from the server Browser says: The FastCGI process exited unexpectedly Module FastCgiModule Notification ExecuteRequestHandler Handler PHP_via_FastCGI Error Code 0xc0000005 I tried all the usual fixes, I set the error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED I also set the date.timezone ="America/Los_Angeles" - don't know if the quotes matter I also read that setting Write permission for the Anonymous Identity on the wp-content folder fixed this issue but I did that and it does not fix the issue. Ironically I was doing all of this while creating a write up to install PHP 5.3 on the IIS 7 Windows 2008 Server Platform so I was testing it out on my server as I wrote it. I followed my instructions and it worked fine but then about every three clicks I got the 500 Internal Server Error. The odd thing is that if I click the refresh button the page pops up fine without any error, then I can go on for about thr

it only takes a minute: Sign up Debugging 500 Internal Server Error on PHP running on IIS7 cluster up vote 10 down vote favorite 3 Recently my ISP switched our website to an IIS7.0 high availibility cluster. The website https://forums.iis.net/t/prev/1224693 is running on PHP5.2.1 and I can only upload files (so no registry tweaks). I had tested the website before and everything seemed to be working, but now the checkout page fails with: 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. As error messages go, this isn't very informative. I've tried: ini_set('display_errors', 1); ini_set('error_log', $file_php_can_write_to ); but both don't seem to do anything. Anyone know how http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1696867/debugging-500-internal-server-error-on-php-running-on-iis7-cluster to get better debugging output? php iis iis-7 share|improve this question edited Dec 24 '12 at 22:07 Charles 40.1k1069107 asked Nov 8 '09 at 15:29 Matthijs P 6921615 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 24 down vote accepted Edit : Looks like we have a similar question in serverfault. Check it out Turning off IIS7 custom errors will allow error responses from your application to be sent to remote clients without being censored by the IIS7’s custom errors module. You can do this from the IIS7 Admin tool by running “Start>Run>inetmgr.exe”, selecting your website/application/virtual directory in the left-hand tree view, clicking on the “Error Pages” icon, clicking “Edit Feature Settings” action, and then selecting “Detailed Errors” Source share|improve this answer edited Nov 8 '09 at 16:16 answered Nov 8 '09 at 15:34 Shoban 20.3k74998 Actually I'm using Firefox. –Matthijs P Nov 8 '09 at 15:40 This does change things but now I'm getting a plain text: "The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred." –Matthijs P Nov 8 '09 at 16:05 2 +1 I'm just using classic asp, and ran into this... same answer works for me. –Lynn Crumbling Aug 9 '12 at 20:50 1 Make sure when using PHP that your code contains error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', '1'); or that the php ini is set to display errors. 18th, 2012 When you install a php into IIS7 and try to execute phpinfo() script you can get an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error message. The most http://p-lider.lideve.eu/wordpress/?p=137 probably cause of this is that php-cgi.exe program is writing some text to https://www.servertastic.com/support/500-internal-server-error-with-php-fastcgi-on-windows stderr. By default IIS7 displays an HTTP 500 error message when it detects such behavior even, when the CGI displayed only a warning message on stderr. To avoid this problem you have to change default error handling for FastCGI in IIS7. To do this follow the following steps: Start IIS Manager Click internal server on

However one of the problems is that instead of outputting errors the server simply returns a 500 Server Error or Internal Server Error. This can be unhelpful as you need to see the error message to debug. Firstly you need to turn off custom errors. This can sometimes be done via your control panel.
