practical steps that you can take to narrow down the problem and hopefully eliminate it. For the uninitiated, a "500 Internal Server Error" is a message much like the common "404 internal server error cgi-bin apache File Not Found" message. You get the latter message in your browser when you try to access a non-existent web page. You get the "500 Internal Server Error" message when you try to run a script with problems. For the purposes of this article, I am assuming that your CGI script is a Perl script, by far the most commonly available on the Internet. how to fix 500 internal server error wordpress We will try to eliminate the most common errors first (and the easiest-to-eliminate ones): Location Did you upload your scripts into the right place? This is not as obvious as it may seem. Some servers are configured to run your CGI scripts anywhere. Others will only run it when it is installed in a particular directory. It is not just a matter of creating a "cgi-bin" directory — for example, some hosts configure the server so that it will run scripts only from a particular directory outside the web directory structure (for security reasons). Your web page will still call the script "/cgi-bin/script.pl" but the server maps it to the actual directory. You will have to upload it in the right directory, regardless of what your web page calls it. Find out such information from your web host's documentation. File Upload Mode Did you upload your Perl script in ASCII mode? Your FTP client may have uploaded the script in binary mode if you did not take any special action. Perl scripts are ASCII files, and since different operating systems have different ways of representing the end of line character

short answer: this is usually a permissions error on your CGI script, which is easy to fix. Go to your FTP client, or your website file manager, and highlight or right-click on the CGI script. Then choose http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/servererror.shtml Properties, or Permissions, or "Chmod", and set it to world-executable: that's 0755, or a+rx, or -rwxr-xr-x. Do NOT use 0777 (a+rwx or -rwxrwxrwx). And your cgi-bin directory itself should also be 0755, not 0777. The long answer: when running a Perl CGI script like FileChucker or UserBase, you may see the "Internal Server Error" message in your browser. The message will usually also say something like "please check the server's error-log for more information." You https://encodable.com/internal_server_error/ should do that -- the message printed to the error log will often tell you exactly what the problem is. The Apache error log, for example, is often located at /var/log/apache/error_log or /var/log/apache2/error_log (or sometimes "error.log"). If you don't have access to the error log, the next simplest thing to do is to make a backup copy of the script, then open the original and delete all of its contents, and add just these 3 lines to the file: #!/usr/bin/perl print "Content-type: text/plain\n\n"; print "testing...\n"; (Note: if the server is a Windows system, then replace the first line above with either #!perl or #!c:\path\to\perl.exe.) Now try to access the page in your browser again. If it works (you see "testing..." as its output) then you know that your server is at least configured properly for running Perl CGI scripts. If it doesn't work, then that may mean the problem is in the server configuration, rather than with your CGI script. (For example, are you sure you actually have Perl installed? Virtually all UNIX/Linux/OS X servers do, but Windows servers usually need to have it installed manually, from a free package like ActivePerl.) Assuming your server is configured properly for running CGI scripts, your problem may be one of these common causes for the Internal Server Error: Problems outside the script: Directory permissions: y

Recently, I received an e-mail from a gentleman in the UK who was asking questions about how to set up a CGI programming environment on a Windows box. Below is an edited copy of my reply. It's an "Idiot's Guide" to getting started with CGI programming with Perl on Windows. I present as a way to get started, but not as "the" way to get started. Hopefully Monks who are totally new to this process can use this information. First, you need to get Perl if you do not already have it installed. Go to http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/Download.html and download the latest release for Windows. As of the time I write this, it's a link near the top that reads "Windows MSI". If for some reason you cannot install an MSI package, you can use the "Windows as Package" installer below that (but it's larger and you will have difficulty uninstalling it). If you do not enjoy the luxury of a high-speed Internet connection, you can find a smaller download near the bottom of the page at "Intel, APi522e.exe". This is about 2 to 3 megs smaller than the releases above. It is only Perl 5.005 (the others are 5.6), but the majority of Perl programs are still written in 5.005, so that's not an issue. However, some of the latest and coolest stuff you can do with Perl won't be available. If you're new to Perl, it will be a long time before you worry about stuff like that. Once downloaded, double-click on the executable to install it. Accept all of the defaults, if possible. Next, you need a Web server. I recommend you dowload Apache for Windows. Go to http://www.apache.org/dist/ and find "Windows Installer". It's about a 3.6 meg download. Double-click the icon after do
