Error message during Repair installation of Windows XP Started by sue.words , Mar 15 2012 11:44 AM Page 1 of 2 1 2 Next Please log in to reply #1 sue.words Posted 15 March 2012 - 11:44 AM sue.words Member Member 97 posts I am in the middle of doing a Repair installation of Windows XP and have got an error message. Help! I have inserted the installation disk and everything until now has gone fine: the old files have been deleted and the new ones all copied. Now this has appeared on the screen: "Setup cannot set the required Windows XP configuration information. this indicates an internal Setup error. Contact your system administrator." (I presume I am my system administrator and I haven't a clue what to do.) At the bottom it helpfully says: "F3=Quit". Where on earth will I be if I do press F3? Come to that, where will I be if I don't? I don't know which way to turn. Please advise me! 0 Advertisements #2 wannabe1 Posted 15 March 2012 - 05:44 PM wannabe1 Tech Staff Technician 16,645 posts Hello sue.words... Might I ask what prompted you to run the repair installation? If you press F3 it should quit the installation, revert to the original configuration, and either shut down or reboot. However, sometimes you'll end up in a setup loop where it will keep booting to the failed setup operation and fail again. Microsoft attributes this particular error to hardware that's not compatible with

Solved Internal Setup error during XP Repair Install Posted on 2009-07-03 Anti-Virus Apps Windows XP Installation 3 Verified Solutions 12 Comments 3,691 Views Last Modified: 2013-11-22 This is for a customer, I fix PCs for a living. PC is an HP Slimline 7250n running XP Media http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/315691-error-message-during-repair-installation-of-windows-xp/ Center SP2 (Desktop PC). After extensive malware removal, PC works fine in Safe mode but in normal mode at boot get an error about Explorer.exe has encountered an error and has to close and then things go bad. I then Expanded Explorer.exe from the i386 folder to the Windows folder and this did NOT fix the problem. THE ABOVE IS BACKGROUND ONLY; I DOUBT THIS POST HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH MALWARE. I then tried a Windows https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24543512/Internal-Setup-error-during-XP-Repair-Install.html repair install from a generic Windows Media Center SP2 CD. However the CD drive was broke so I replaced it with a 2003 internal CD drive I CARRY AROUND FOR EXACTLY THIS USE. After the copy phase, I get the following error "Setup can not set the required Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal setup error. Contact your system administrator. Press F3 to continue" Before continuing read the following two links What MS says about this error http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316425&Product=winxp What HP says about this error for a wide range of HP laptops http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00603573&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodSeriesId=432999&prodTypeId=321957 Note; The HP article is dated 2006, the same time period, a XP Media Center SP2 PC probably came out as Media Center was introduced in 2005. Also I doubt the problem exists just for HP laptops. Also the HP article essentially says the MS KB article is wrong, there is no problem, just continue. Regarding the MS KB article (incompatible HW or update the BIOS) I did change the CD drive but SO WHAT ??? ALL 2003 CD DRIVES ARE COMPAITBLE WITH WINDOWS XP SP2 AREN'T THEY ? Also I have used this EXACT CD drive with at least 5 previous XP SP2 Repair Installs with no problems. My XP Media Center SP2 CD has also been used at least 5 times on Repair installs. Furthermore before the Repair install I checked Device Man

It starts to boot and just before where it usually asks for a password, it restarts the boot again and just keeps cycling. If I move the drive to another computer as a slave drive, not the boot drive, all the files and applications seem to be readable and Norton Disk Doctor can't find any problems with the disk. Running the System File Checker didn't help so I tried to do a reinstall of Windows using the repair option. When I do that, just after setup copies files, it stops with the message that "Setup cannot set the required Windows XP Configuration information. This indicates an internal setup error". The MS knowledge base says that this is because I have some hardware which is not compatible with XP, however the hardware on that machine has been running with XP for the last 2 years and I don't think it has suddenly become incompatible after working well for that long. I have even tried disconnecting all the hardware except the monitor, keyboard, and mouse but I still get the same result. Before I do a clean install of XP and therefore need to reinstall all my apps, does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.
