noir, Burwood (Christchurch), New Zealand Level 9 "Invalid drive X:\" install errors | 10319Views | Last Modified: May 30, 2012 4:57 PM SymptomsWhile upgrading or uninstalling a Windows software package (such as iTunes for Windows or QuickTime for Windows), you may receive the following error message:Invalid Drive X:\... where the red X:\ could be any drive letter (F, H, J, or so on.) Usually you won't actually have a drive with that particular drive letter on your system.Typically, this is caused by a problem with an installer database entry for a component for the software package. The installer database believes that the component is on the X:\ drive. When your Windows Installer goes to remove that component from the X:\ drive while uninstalling the existing version of the software and doesn't find any drive there at all it gets horribly confused and you get the "Invalid Drive" message. If that is what is afoot with your "Invalid Drive X:\" message, there are a couple of possible resolutions for the problem: (a) temporarily adding an X:\ hard drive to your system, or (b) clearing the installation database for the software package for which you're getting the "Invalid Drive X:\" message.(a) Temporarily add an X:\ hard drive to your systemSo long as you actually have an X:\ hard drive on your system, your Windows Installer will typically remain relatively calm during the uninstall of the existing software (even if it can't find the component it was looking for on the drive in question). So one way of getting past an "Invalid drive X:\" message is to temporarily add an X:\ hard drive to your system. If you don't have a hard drive available, you could try using the SUSBT command at the command prompt.(1) Launch a command prompt. How you go about doing this depends on which Windows operating system you're running. If you're running Windows XP, first open your Start menu and click "Run". Type cmd

when you install iTunes onto a portable hard drive, or something like that. How you cheat it is, again, with the Command Prompt. So:Start -> Run -> "cmd""subst e: %TEMP%" (where "e:" is whatever drive is http://inthecockpit.blogspot.com/2011/04/itunes-not-installing-invalid-drive.html causing the problem)Try installing againThat should solve it.The more technical reason is:Somewhere in the registry, it's told to look at E: drive for iTunes stuffE: normally doesn't exist (portable hard drive & all)So it gives an error"subst" says "pretend https://harryitguy.wordpress.com/2010/12/01/error-1327-invalid-drive-drive-letter-while-installing-or-updating-adobe-acrobat/ that e: is this directory (usually C:\Temp)"Cheated!Obviously, plugging in that portable hard drive and installing would be the easiest way to do it.Now I think of it.Bleh.Labels: computing posted by Jo at 12:12 am 8 Comments: Anonymous said... while installing or updating AdobeAcrobat Posted on December 1, 2010 | Leave a comment Another in the long list of annoying Adobe issues is the "Error 1327.Invalid Drive: [drive letter] while installing or updating Adobe Acrobat" error. It comes up when installing Adobe Acrobat 9 or Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 or X on Windows 7 Enterprise on machines with mapped network drives. It may also come up with other versions of Windows 7. I don't know if it's an issue on machines with multiple physical or logical drives (E, F, G, etc.). It has not been a major issue for me because I have found that installing with the local admin profile which doesn't map drives works. I don't know what happens if it tries to auto-update on the profiles with mapped drives. Users aren't permitted to update software, so it shouldn't be an issue there. I also suspect that this won't be an issue if you dump software using a tool. Adobe has a KB article about it here. Like this:Like Loading...
