Comments Ian Paul | @ianpaul Contributor, PCWorld Apr 4, 2016 3:30 AM I really wish I could quit iTunes. It’s such a big, bloaty monstrosity. But if you have Apple devices in the house, it’s an essential piece of software. Just the other day I needed to do a factory reset on an Apple TV that required the program. The following tips should come in handy for those of you who use iTunes for Windows XP, in the event that your iTunes installation ends up in less-than-perfect operating condition. First off, we suggest uninstalling iTunes from the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel and then installing the latest version of iTunes downloaded from Apple.com. This may fix some issues with older versions. Apple also suggests keeping your anti-virus software up to date. Now, on to some more-specific issues. Problem #1 Certain iTunes screens are pink. (Note: Only a problem if you don’t like pink.) Cause: Windows is set to display a low-quality color palette, and thus cannot correctly render the iTunes window when it demands a high-quality color. Solution: Make sure Windows is set to display 32-bit color in the Display Control Panel. This will be under the Settings tab, as “Color Quality.” Problem #2 Error messages as follows: “iTunes might be unable to launch or communicate with iPod or iPhone.” “The iPod (Customer’s iPod) cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)” “The iPod (Customer’s iPod) could not be restored. An unknow

Users report that they are no longer able to connect to their iTunes account and receive various error messages such as error 0x80090326, error -50 or simply an "unknown error". The 0x80090326 error indicates there is an issue in establishing an security connection. The problem affects Windows XP users up to the current version of iTunes 12.1.2, which Apple offers for users on Windows XP SP3. It's appears that iTunes can't establish a mandatory secure connection with the iTunes Store on the unsupported and outdated Windows XP operating system. Both Microsoft and Apple have not commented on the issue and so far the only solution appears to switch to another operating system. The failure not only makes it impossible to purchase new content from the iTunes Store, but also causes problem when users want to watch earlier purchased movies or TV series. Users that purchased a season pass for a series can't watch any new episodes anymore. It's also no longer possible to authorize the PC for iTunes which makes it impossible to play DRM protected content.
