I can't play the avi files from my camera. WMP doesn't give an errormessage or anything, just a black screen. Irfanview at least gave the errormessage 'Can't find decompressor vids: mjpg' and 'Video not available'. So I followed the media player FAQ on the Irfansite to find the codec. Downloaded and installed it and there is some improvement: I have a still at the start of the avi and there is sound, but no video. What's wrong? Sarah. Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top jd2066 Posts: 3814 This post has been reported. Video files have two codecs. One for audio and one for video. It appears how to play you found one for sound but not video. What is the model number of camera you have? Reports: · Posted 8 years ago Top ScottW Posts: 6609 This post has been reported. Sarah, I also have a camera (Canon PowerShot) that takes movies in MJPEG format. This stands for "Motion JPEG" which is a format that does very little compression making it easy for a camera to process. The resulting files are larger, but easy to edit. I also have IrfanView -- an awesome pic viewer, BTW -- but, it's not really the best media player. Although I have codecs installed to decompress MJPEG, I get the same message from IrfanView that you get. That's because IrfanView uses and older codec scheme (VFW), not the most recent DirectShow scheme. Oh, the audio plays back because it's "PCM" format which is essentially uncompressed and doesn't require a codec. So, first thing that you should do is try playback from another media player. From previous threads, I remember that you don't like WMP and are using Winamp instead. The latest builds of Winamp do support DirectShow Filters for decompression, so the codec that you got may already work. If Win

This file format consists of two separate streams, i.e. audio and video streams. When AVI file is made to play, these two streams are combined according to CODEC algorithms. CODEC (coder – decoder) is similar to a program installed on system that does both encoding and decoding of digital information stream for storing, transmission and for encryption purposes without any difficulty. This CODEC of an AVI video file plays a vital role in safe guarding the files’ information; hence any damage to CODEC can completely corrupt the file making it unplayable. Let us consider one real time scenario to know how AVI file can get corrupt due to CODEC error. You downloaded a video from internet and tried to play the video, but your media player suggested you to convert the video file to AVI format. So, you clicked on convert option provided in the dialogue box. However, even after converting to AVI file format, the video was not playable as it showed some codec error message. This is because while converting the video to AVI format, the video file’s CODEC got damaged and now the media player did not have correct CODEC to play the AVI file. There are plenty of other issues too that can alter CODEC of an AVI video file, thus making it corrupt. Have a look at different scenarios that can induce CODEC errors while trying to play AVI files: If there is no proper CODEC present on the system to support AVI files then, AVI file shows error message when tried to play, stating that there are some CODEC issues that is making the video file not playable When you download CODEC program to play particular AVI file on your Windows system, the CODEC may get damaged if there are any interruptions while downloading it. Also, downloading CODEC programs from unauthorized sites can cause malicious virus infection to the CODEC program When yo
