2008 setup if Program Files has a trailing backslash ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Aaron StebnerJanuary 14, 200811 0 0 0 I heard from microsoft visual studio web authoring component download a customer who ran into an interesting issue during Visual Studio 2008 error installing microsoft visual studio 2010 shell setup that I hadn't seen until now. I wanted to post a description of the issue, how error installing microsoft visual studio 2010 shell sql server 2012 we diagnosed it and how to work around the issue in case anyone else runs into a similar issue in the future. Description of this issue On this customer's system, the Web Authoring Component prerequisite component failed to install and Visual Studio 2008 setup failed as a result. There are many possible causes for this type of failure, so we need to dig deeper to try to find the exact cause of the failure. How to diagnose this issue Visual Studio 2008 setup runs the Web Authoring Component setup package in silent mode, so the next step is to take a look at the log file for the Web Authoring Component to narrow down the issue further. This issue will cause the following information to be written to the log file for the Web Authoring Component (named %temp%\SetupExe(*).log): Catalyst valid path check failed: The path c:\Program Files\\Microsoft Web Designer Tools is invalid Notice that there is an extra backslash between Program Files and Microsoft Web Designer Tools in this log file. I had the customer check their registry and we found that the path to the Program Files folder was being stored there with a trailing backslash, but Windows typically stores the path to Program Files and other system folders without trailing backslashes. In this scenario, it is also possible to run Web Authoring Component setup directly from

My Configuration: Windows 7 Home Premium, Dual Core, IIS 7, PHP 5.13, .NET 2.0 installed. I have completely removed Office 2010 Beta, and 2007. I even manually deleted the leftover registry entries for these items and the folders in the shared directory. Problem: Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component (KB945140) refuses to finish executing and will not generate an error. Symptoms: The process shows as loaded, but it does nothing. Zip. Nada. No logs, no errors, no nothing. When terminated. WPI simply says it couldn't install the components relevent to this. Again, no error messages at all! (utterly frustrating). I figured that perhaps it was just not installing in time, so I let this silly process run for 5 hours. Nothing. nada. zip. Things I've tried: - Uninstalling office - Reinstalling WPI - Uninstalling the web component - Manually uninstalling and reinstalling the web component - copying the live installation of the KB945140 and installing it from another location to try to force it to deliver some kind of error message or exception. - Downloading the ISO for SP1 Any ideas? 1:13 update I'm updating this post with new things I'm trying to see if any of them work. At this point I'm blowing away all instances of MSSQL, all SQL Servers, All 2005 and 2008 Redistributables for C++ that anything to do with the Visual Studio Suites 2005 or 2008. The dvd installs correctly all the way up to ... guess which line? "Update for Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component (KB945140). It is hanging, the same darn file is loaded as a process. Utterly no feedback of any kind. Not in the event logs, the setup logs, nothing. It simply stops doing anything.-- Result: Nothing. Won't Install and hangs. 2:23 Removing IIS and reinstalling. wpi
