Oracle Error 12560
takes a minute: Sign up ORA-12514 TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor up vote 76 down vote favorite 18 We have an application running locally where we're experiencing the following error: ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor I've tested the connection using TNSPing which resolved correctly and I tried oracle error 12541 SQLPlus to try connecting, which failed with the same error as above. I used this syntax for SQLPlus: sqlplus username/password@addressname[or host name] We have verified that: the TNS Listener on the server is running. Oracle itself on the server is running. We don't know of any changes that were made to this environment. Anything else we can test? oracle oracle11g sqlplus tnsping share|improve this question edited Apr 6 at 9:18 zb226 4,16711844 asked May 28 '12 at 15:07 Jacques 1,80742566 what is TNSPing command (with params) that you used? –Grzegorz W May 28 '12 at 15:14 when you say "running locally" you mean that the application is connecting to a database on the same host? Also, what are the contents of your sqlnet.ora file? what versions are reported for sqlplus and tnsping, and are you sure that they're in the same ORACLE_HOME? –David Aldridge May 28 '12 at 16:08 try restarting the database. Since they supposed to inform the Listener about their existence on startup this might fix your problem. –Jens Schauder May

Database is 11g Oracle DB... There is no problem when I connect using SQL Developer, however using Visual Studio I get the error of ORA-12514 (TNS:listener does not currently ora 12514 error know of service requested in connect descriptor). 11g ODAC for Visual Studio 2010 has been configured as well. There are similar questions about this error, I could not find solution for my problem. Thanks in advance for the help!!! oracle oracle-11g-r2 listener visual-studio share|improve this question asked Nov 28 '14 at 16:29 user1722022 155128 What version of Windows are you running? Have you configured the TNS listener? Have you invoked the tnsping dbsid command? –Mark Stewart Nov 30 '14 at 4:52 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted I do not have any clear explanation for this problem solution. However I used SID instead of service name in connection string and it worked. Edit: A service name is more flexible than a SID would be. A database can dynamically register with a listener using one or more service names. In fact, more than one database can register with a listener using the same service name.A database on the other hand has a single SID. And a single SID goes to a single database. So I would say it is safe to use SID rather than service name. share|improve this answer edited Aug 13 '15 at 20:05 answered Dec 1 '14 at 15:45 user1722022 155128 add a c
