My PC was shut down improperly after my graphics card freaked cobrowse error code 1033 out, which caused Oracle 11g Express to not properly close down. This means that I get the above error when I try to connect. My PC has been on for 3 hours, and I still get the error, so it is safe to assume that there's something wrong. The usual way of remedying the problem is to use the following sequence of commands from the command line: sqlplus /nolog SQL> connect / as sysdba SQL> shutdown abort SQL> startup

I got a similar issue due to graphics card failure. –Dish Mar 3 at 6:57 If you find one, post it here and I'll mark it as the accepted answer. –Juann Strauss Mar 3 at 8:23 Well sadly in my case I had to reinstall oracle to make things work. Configuring a new SID even did not work. So I dont know about the solution but best you can do to "create restore points" of your database to quick fix such issues in future. –Dish Mar 7 at 5:55 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote This worked for me: Open the Start menu --> All Programs Open folder "Oracle Database 11g Express Edition" Choose "Start Database" Wait until you get "C:\Windows\system32" Open "Run SQL Command Line" and connect to your database share|improve this answer edited Mar 3 '14 at 17:08 Kara 3,17573148 answered Mar 3 '14 at 16:41 user2176902 518 add a comment| up vote 0

Following Follow Software Hello, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18491892/ora-1033-oracle-initialization-or-shutdown-in-progress I have a Problem with my HP B132L-Workstation, running HP-UX 10.20 and Oracle 7.x. An application, which is based on the Oracle database won't start any more with the Error Message: Cannot connect to Database Oracle Error -1033. My first guess was, that the Harddisk is defective, or the Database is somehow corrupt. Against this theory speaks, that the System is normally booting, and the filesystem looks OK. (I checked http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/itanswers/cannot-connect-to-database-oracle-error-1033/ with bdf). Now what I could probably do, is to buy a new Harddisk, and install all the applications again, but I would loose all the data inside the Database. Therefore before taking such a drastic measure, I would like to make sure, that the Harddisk is really defective. - is there a way, to check the Harddisk? I heard of fsck. Can this be done safely on a mounted Filesystem? - is there a way, to repair the Database? Please help !!!
