I found that it was due to the “Retrieve data incrementally in groups of" option in query governor. The option was set to 1000. When I changed it to 10000 the problem was fixed. DO NOT DEPEND UPON IMPLICIT DATE CONVERSIONS! It is very bad practice to insert a string value (17-NOV-2009) into a date field. The implicit conversion depends upon NLS settings and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1234291/no-descriptor-for-this-position-oracle-error so on, so it isn't very portable. It is much better to perform an explicit conversion using to_char(). If this was a one-off query in Toad, well, it doesn't matter. But I'd not want someone to think this is a good idea. –Adam Hawkes Aug 20 '09 at 2:28 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted I was getting this in TOAD. The same should work with table 'A' with LONG column in lower version of ORACLE i.e less than ORACLE 8. Similary the table 'A' with CLOB column in higher versions of ORACLE. i.e ORACLE 8 or above. Please clarify if i change a LONG column to CLOB then whether data will loss or not. Thank you.
