On bootup, it shows the initial bios screen and Gateway logo, and then its all black. When I try to access system setting via pci system error on bus/device/function 0000h the F2 key, I got the PCI parity error on bus/device/function 000h message, and then it changes to a screen that shows Fixed disk 0: Parity Check 1. If its the hard drive, why won't it boot from a startup disk either? And if it's the mobo, why do I even get the initial bios screen? brucedl, Oct 1, 2002

Does it give any unusual POST code beeps? Your PCI bus slots are wired to an 8 bit parallel data bus. The basic way to constantly monitor this is to add a nineth bit. Then the circuits that put the data on the bus count the number of bits in the word and if it is an even number of bits usually adds a parity bit so the word contains an odd number of bits. This is called "odd parity". Even parity can be used, the the usual convention is odd. Then once the data arrives, it's checked. If you picked up or lost a bit, the system flags an error. Yes, there's an obvious flaw in the system. What if you pickup or lose two bits? Parity checking will not be able to detect that. That could be a number of things, like your modem, your network interface card, your soundcard, etc. If you can state the make and model of your laptop, somebody might be able to tell you what it is, and if you can replace it yourself.
