In this post i will use a "real-life" example, which actually happened to me some days http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN266153 ago :I recently had an error reported by a script (which can be found here) based on the command line interface for Open Manage, in this log a PCI bus was reported as faulty, i then needed to find out which component was using this PCI bus … 1) The error message Here is the error messages given http://cavepopo.hd.free.fr/wordpress/how-to/how-to-find-the-hardware-component-corresponding-to-a-pci-address-using-lspci/ by the DELL OpenManage web interface : Mon Jul 9 14:24:33 2012A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 1 function 0. Severity : Critical Date and Time : Fri Jul 13 11:19:29 2012 Description : A bus fatal error was detected on a component at bus 1 device 0 function 0. We now clearly need to find what are the hardware components connected to those PCI bus. 2) Using and understanding lspci output This section is about the lspci command, these are only basics commands related to our current problem. 2.1 General lspci output syntax lspci print its results using the following syntax :

On bootup, it shows the initial bios screen and Gateway logo, and then its all black. When I try to access system setting via the parity error F2 key, I got the PCI parity error on bus/device/function 000h message, and then it changes to a screen that shows Fixed disk 0: Parity Check 1. If its the hard drive, why won't it boot from a startup disk either? And if it's the mobo, why do I even get the initial bios screen? brucedl, Oct 1, 2002 #1 pci parity error Sponsor Rockn Joined: Jul 29, 2001 Messages: 21,335 Could be any number of things, but my guess would be the IDE controller on the motherboard or the drive itself. Does it give any unusual POST code beeps? How lost it feels without my beloved PC ! Tried using it last night and some really strange stuff ocurred on boot-up. Rather than the normal full screen Dell logo, I got information about my BIOS and processor with a "hit DEL to enter set up". Unfortunately, neither the mouse nor keyboard had been detected so all I could do was wait. Low and behold, the screen went blank, followed by the following error : PCI Parity error on BUS/Device/Function on 00080h (or sometimes ooooh). The messages was randomly jumping accross the screen which worried me a tad. I am no expert but guessed this may be a hardware fault, so re-seated my RAM and checked that the processor, fan (which is working fine)and all slots and leads were in properly. On one of my trillion attempts, it did fully boot and load windows. Not wanting to count my chickens, I shut- down and tried again. Since then, no joy though, just get the same message. I am running a Dell Dimension XPS 500, with 384 MB ram (3 x PC 100 mhz 128 MB), and Intel PIII 500 processor. Any ideas you nice people ? I tried using a startup disk but the boot does not seem to go far enough to detect the floppy drive/Cd drive/mouse/keyboard etc Thinking about it, a similar problem arose when I last move the PC. That time though, I didn't get any error
