Percent Error and Percent Yield Percent Error The Percent Error equation is simply (|actual yeild - theoretical yield| / theoretical yield) * 100 *these | | mean aboslute value. Which means that negatives don't count. If you got |-3|, it would turn into a 3. The actual yield is the amount produced from the experiment. The theoretical yield is the amount that theoretically should have been produced. The theoretical yield is calculated with a stochiometry problem. (See the page "Stoichiometry" to the right if you don't know how to calculate the theoretical yield) So actual is the actual that came out, theoretical is the number that the stoich problem said should come out. A student does an experiment in which he reacts 5.7 grams of sodium (Na) with chlorine (Cl). He ends up with 12.6 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl). The balanced equation is below: Na + Cl --> NaCl What is the percent error of the student? To solve this first calculate the theoretical yield using a basic stoichiometry problem (See "Stoichiometry"). The result should be 14.5 grams NaCl theoretically produced from reacting 5.7 grams of Na with Cl. So 14.5gNaCl is the theoretical yield. The actual yield is 12.6gNaCl, so plug the numbers into the equation: (|12.6 - 14.5| / 14.5) * 100 = 13.10%. So the percent error of this student was 13.10% Percent Yield Percent yield equation is: (actual yield / theoretical yield) * 100 The actual yield is the amount produced from the experiment. The theoretical yield is the amount that theoretically should have been produced. The theoretical yield is calculated with a stochiometry problem.
