Last Updated : July 22, 2010 Products Affected : Pro_Tools The drive cannot be designated as an Audio playback/recording volume because this is not a valid audio volume in Pro Tools on OS X. This can happen for different reasons. Check hard drives in the workspace (in Pro Tools, go to the Window menu and choose "Workspace" or it may appear as "Show Workspace" in Pro Tools version 6.x) and make sure the ( A ) column to the right of the drive is set to ( R ) and not ( T ) or ( P ). Here's a quick Pro Tools personality disorder test: When launching a Pro Tools session, do you think, "Gee, I can't wait to spend my precious time organizing and managing my media files and http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Error_Message/en323949 session info?" If this is indeed something you think about, you may suffer from acute 3M personality disorder -- that's "media management masochistic" behavior. Luckily, there's a cure: DigiBase, the file management utility found in Pro Tools software 6.0 and above. DigiBase provides an intuitive way to manage all your media files. This is especially important when you have media files located http://www2.digidesign.com/digizine/dz_Q105/index.cfm?page=workshop/techtalk/index.html across multiple sources, including CDs and external drives. You can view complete file information, including duration, timestamps, and user comments, and audition files before importing them into Pro Tools, regardless of file format or sample rate. Just drag and drop the chosen file from the DigiBase window, and the audio will automatically be copied and converted. Thom Loftus, one of Digi's Tech Support gurus, often gets questions pertaining to saving new sessions to a hard drive, and why Pro Tools sometimes can't see the hard drive as a "valid audio volume." His answer: Check the drive in DigiBase. Let's take a closer look. Make Sure Pro Tools Recognizes Your Hard Drives Step One: Make sure your drives are properly formatted. Many drives come pre-formatted, but it's a good idea to format them yourself. In Mac OS X, always format hard drives with the Mac OS X Disk Utility. On your Mac hard drive, go to Applications > Utilities and launch the "Disk Utility." Format your drive for Mac OS extended, non-journaled. In Windows, use the disk management utility. Always format your drives for

Backup Info:I have installed and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1234946?start=0&tstart=0 updated my relatively old-school MBox ProTools system onto my new MacPro (standard, 2x 2.66 Intel with 2GB Memory). While trying to start a new session with ProTools I get the error message that a "Session http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/drive-cannot-designated-audio-playback-recording-volume-because-not/ Must Be On An Audio Record Volume". Checking the Digidesign support pages I was told to change my standard 250GB Mac HD from a Transfer Volume to a Record Volume. Here is my MacPro question:When I try pro tools to change my HD from Transfer to Record I get an error message saying my HD "cannot be designated as an Audio Record volume because it is not a valid audio volume". I see all of these posts from people who have ProTools running successfully in their studios, how do I convert my HD to a valid audio drive like I assume all of yours are? By the way, Pro Tools runs much better if you use another drive besides your boot drive for audio. I highly recommend buying an external or if your MP has another drive in it without all the applications on it, use that. NEVER use the boot drive when you have four internal drive bays, use those for data, scratch, media. The less you force the boot drive to do double and triple duty the smoother everything runs.
