The BIOS is stored on a chip on your motherboard. Even if the HDD was dead or unrecognised, you would still be able to access the BIOS. I currently don't have the Windows XP install disk. Any suggestions would be awesome. I'm don't have very much knowledge on the workings of the computer, like telling if it is reading the hard drive or not so detailed suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I don't have any network cables plugged into the computer and nothing is https://forums.techguy.org/threads/pxe-e61-media-test-failure-check-cable.945502/ in the CD-Rom drive or the floppy disk drive. It also means it's trying to boot from the Network, so either the network card is listed before the hard drive in the boot order in the BIOS, or the hard drive is dead/has a bad cable, or is disabled in the BIOS. Can't find that model number on the Gateway site, but did find an E 4100, and info on the ESSEX Motherboard, which maybe the ESX part. Gateway E-4100 Computer Intel (Essex) Pentium 4 - 2.0 GHz (400MHz) motherboard The User Guide doesn't have much info on the BIOS, but says "While your computer is restarting, press and hold the F1 key." to get into the BIOS. Looks like it has some built in help for the different options. You can try running Diagnostics on the hard drive. Try using the ones from the drive manufacturer if possible: Hard Drive Diagnostics: Seagate/Maxtor Western Digital IBM/Hitachi Fujitsu/Seimens Free Hard Drive Testing Applications: HD Tune HDAT2 (Diagnostics and bad sector recovery) MHDD Low-l
