Windows 7: Constant Freezing + Disk Read Error + Detecting SATA drives 01 Nov 2012 #1 djdmorrison Windows 7 32bit 3 posts http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2484457/random-system-crashes-disk-read-error-restart.html Constant Freezing + Disk Read Error + Detecting SATA drives So recently my desktop PC has been freezing at random times, and then sometimes restarting after not responding for a couple of minutes (no BSOD, just restarts as far as I've seen). It sometime freezes as soon as I turn the computer on, while Windows is loading, and sometimes it will http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/261900-constant-freezing-disk-read-error-detecting-sata-drives.html start freezing after an hour it's been on. Most of the time it will just freeze for around a minute, and then unfreeze, but sometimes it does freeze and then restart. By freeze I mean everything, mouse included, and ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work. Also at bootup sometimes, it will fail to detect my SATA hard-drive and hang at Detecting SATA drives at the bios screen. This will be following by a disk read error. This problem started occuring a couple of weeks a go, so I reinstalled Windows 7 and it worked fine after that. However three days ago the same problems started occuring so I'm guessing its hardware related Running Windows 7 Bios: Phoenix - AwardBios v6.00PG Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6550 @2.33GHz 2GB RAM Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GS Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as I need this PC for Uni work! Also try enabling Hot Plugging/Swapping in your Bios. Might be a long shot, but try it anyway. Reply 20th October 2011 Post #5 Sgt. You'll disk read error have to find a doner drive of the EXACT model that was made within probably a month of your bad drive. Even then, it's not guaranteed to work because the PCB on drives are constantly changing. If I were you, I'd try a program called Spinrite. It's not free, but it can recover a bad drive well enough in most circumstances to get important data off a drive. The final option before spending $1000+ on data recovery is another program called MHDD that does a block copy of the entire HDD to files, so copy to a doner HDD. This process is extremely difficult and can take literally days to do. Except I upgraded my motherboard which turned out to be faulty and fried the hard drive. My computer would turn on and turn off immediately though as if a fail-safe was triggered. Have you tried searching for your drive on the boot menu or bios settings? press f12 or something while booting. If you can't find it anywhere in there then I guess it's dead.
