I'm a little late to the party...but I just got a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store, and was disappointed to see the Disc Read Error when I tried to play a game. DVDs and CDs got the same error. I followed the instructions here, and turning the little white gear worked!
I marked the gear's current position with a Sharpie, and turned the gear by "clicks". The gear clicks when turned, so I turned it 3 clicks, tested, didn't work. Turned another 3 clicks, tested, etc. Took a few tries, but eventually it started reading discs!
While you have your PS2 open anyway, I'd recommend cleaning the whole insides out. Use a can of air to blow away dust, Windex for hard to clean dust and crud, especially on

Well first off before http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix-the-PS2-Disk-Read-Error/ you go on crazy rampage and crack it open or buy a new ps2 do 3 simple things:Most of the time this problem is due to dirty disk, it is amazing that some disk can work perfectly with thousands of scratches and smudges, but somthing as little as a finger print or some dust can bring up that awful disk error. *some tips on cleaning disk* - first http://www.gamespot.com/forums/games-discussion-1000000/playstation-2-disk-read-error-solutions-23572005/ of all use a clean cloth(duh  )preferably a disk cleaning cloth. -clean from the inside out instraight lines. -be carful what you clean with best stick to retail cleaners for cds (i use windex but its not recomended) -the most important thing is to clean softly do not rub because you can kind of wax the cd if you rub too hard. -the safest path is just to go buy a cd cleaner at walmart If that does not work then a simple solution is to turn the PlayStation on its left side. Trust me i know it sounds stupid but it works wonders:P. *make sure you have it prorerly suported the last thing you need is your ps2 to take a dive of the game table.*If those 2 dont work then you could try cleaning you lens by using a cleaning disk like this oneAnother solution is to open you disk tray then turn it off and spray the heck out of the tray and the slot in the ps2. (complements to jekkie) *Some times the compresed air cans will shoot out water (ice too if turn it upside down :P ) so keep your ps2 turned off:) if this does happe

Rob Nelson - Nov 10, 2003 2:20 am UTC reader comments 4 Share this story Ever gotten those annoying Disc read error Read Error messages on your Playstation 2? If you have, I'll bet the first time you saw one was on the 31st day you've had it, after the Sony 30-day warranty expired. If you're real lucky, your PS2 might last two or even three years; eventually this error will hunt down your PS2 and settle down there. If it only affects you some of the time ? you might be able to disc read error play some DVD movies, but your favorite one never loads, or you can only play PSone games and not silver-colored PS2 games ? then chances are it's not a serious error and only requires minor adjustments to your PS2. Since it is out of warranty, there's little risk in opening it up and trying to fix it yourself before paying to send it back to Sony's repair center. The following guide shows you how to get the PS2 open, clean it out, make your adjustments, and put it back together without any hassles. Before we begin, I'd just like to say that if your PS2 is under warranty, get this taken care of by Sony. It's not worth voiding your warranty if you can survive without it for a week or so. If your PS2 can't read anything at all, cross your fingers and read on, but you may have a more serious issue than we can fix. I am using a model SCPH-30001 Playstation 2, with a U serial number. Newer models have different heatsinks and even a different chip layout on the motherboard. Some instructions may vary or not apply for other models. My apologies to modem users, but I'm going to throw in a lot of pictures. You'll

It happens as they get older. I have had the same problem. My system is a launch model and I've had to do this twice. All of my games would read except one (Star Ocean: TtEoT). My system was out of warranty already so I said "ahh, what the hell" and opened it up.If yours is still under warranty, don't do the below...*****Disclaimer: The following process is described exactly as I have done it (several times for friends/family member's PS2s). I take no responsibility if you screw up your system.*****This procedure is to change the angle of the PS2's laser lens. It is safe as long as you don't touch anything while the system is plugged in and do NOT look at the laser if it is reading something.Take out the screws on the bottom and either remove or cut th
