I'm a little late to the party...but I just got a PS2 for $20 at a thrift store, and was disappointed to see the Disc Read Error when I tried to play a game. DVDs and CDs got the same error. I followed the instructions here, and turning the little white gear worked!
I marked the gear's current position with a Sharpie, and turned the gear by "clicks". The gear clicks when turned, so I turned it 3 clicks, tested, didn't work. Turned another 3 clicks, tested, etc. Took a few tries, but eventually it started reading discs!
While you have your PS2 open anyway, I'd recommend cleaning the whole insides out. Use a can of air to blow away dust, Windex for hard to clean dust and crud, especially on the fan blades. It's rather easy to take out the whole fan and power button, as we

Well first off before you go on crazy rampage and crack read error it open or buy a new ps2 do 3 simple things:Most of the time this problem is due to dirty disk, it is amazing that some disk can work perfectly with thousands of scratches and smudges, but somthing as little as a finger print or some dust can bring up that awful disk error. *some tips on cleaning disk* - first of all use a clean cloth(duh  )preferably a disk cleaning disc read error cloth. -clean from the inside out instraight lines. -be carful what you clean with best stick to retail cleaners for cds (i use windex but its not recomended) -the most important thing is to clean softly do not rub because you can kind of wax the cd if you rub too hard. -the safest path is just to go buy a cd cleaner at walmart If that does not work then a simple solution is to turn the PlayStation on its left side. Trust me i know it sounds stupid but it works wonders:P. *make sure you have it prorerly suported the last thing you need is your ps2 to take a dive of the game table.*If those 2 dont work then you could try cleaning you lens by using a cleaning disk like this oneAnother solution is to open you disk tray then turn it off and spray the heck out of the tray and the slot in the ps2. (complements to jekkie) *Some times the compresed air cans will shoot out water (ice too if turn it upside down :P ) so keep your ps2 turned off:) if this does happen just leave it off for about 48 hours and air it out with a fan or a hair dryer on col

Anyway onto the point, I got a ps2 slim on my 9th birthday (i think...if it was my 9th B-Day then that was 4 years ago) and for about 3 years it was working properly.....i mean it fell a few times and stuff but it would still work. now every time i put in a game or a movie or anything else the playstation would play, it would read the disk for ages and then it would say that the disc could not be read...i found out that the ribbon (the one connected to the laser A.K.A the disc reader) was ripped out by my baby sister. so i replaced it and it still didnt help....ive tried taping the disc break like it sez in another topic, and that hasnt helped. i think the laser just might need replacing, but i wasnt sure so i came here...any help? BTW it started not reading discs around november last year ( i think....) thanks in advance! P.S. i am using my PS2 flat at the moment and its so old and used that it wont even play movies or music! lol! and it hardly reads games anymore...so...uh...yeah...id really apreciate it if someone helped with my problem here... thecursor, Dec 29, 2009 #1 thecursor Member Joined: Dec 29, 2009 Messages: 27 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 11 any help? thecursor, Dec 31, 2009 #2 smokyrain Senior member Joined: Sep 15, 2006 Messages: 5,197 Likes Received: 1 Trophy Points: 118 If your disc spins ok, doesn't make any grinding or clicking noise then I would guess it is just your laser that needs replacing. Your laser may just be dirty, you can try cleaning the laser CAREFULLY with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol. Dampen the swab in the alcohol [make sure it's not too wet] and gently clean the laser in a circular motion. Use the dry side of the swab to then dry the laser off in the same motion. If you still get DRE (disc read error) then you will h
