This is a little thing that's happened along the way.My PS2 died on me the other day. I had just played through GTA: San Andreas. Near the end it was giving me some clicks and a Disk Read Error screen from time to time. But it always seemed to catch up with it's self and let me play longer. It started giving me more and more trouble with movies. I would get loud clicking, sometimes grinding sounds, until finally, it crapped out completely. I knew there had to be something I could do. I had seen replacement components on places like Deal Extreme, so I figured there had to be a fix. Instructables was the first place I looked. Not much help here. Just a tutorial that mentioned cleaning the laser eye wh

But it's only held down by the tension of the metal arm it's attached to. So, as indicated in the picture, carefully lift the white rectangle off the threads and slide the laser assembly down the rails towards the rear of the system. It might resist at first, but should move without much force.I moved it as far back as I could. It's possible, your PS2 may be stuck in a different position. My theory is that the gears have just been knocked off track, or gotten stuck, and everything needs be repositioned so they can catch again. It's a crappy theory that has no grounds, but it makes sense to me.Once this is done, replace the cover to the laser housing, put the screws back in. Power it on and give it a test. If I'm anything other than lucky, there should be no clicking or grinding sounds, and hopefully it'll play movies and games just fine. Once you're satisfied, replace the outer housing for the system... Unless you want to give it a crazy case mod first. I plan to eventually.Just in case you didn't mark which screws went in whic

It http://forums.afterdawn.com/threads/heres-how-to-fix-fat-ps2-disc-read-error.540108/ just kept coming up with the infamous "DISC READ ERROR". However I successfully fixed the http://www.gamespot.com/forums/games-discussion-1000000/playstation-2-disk-read-error-solutions-23572005/?page=14 problem in just over ten minutes just by adjusting the laser. How to fix it Turn it upside down, with the expansion bay close to you. Pop off all the rubber and plastic plugs, remove the screws beneath (there's 10). Remove the top cover (careful, there's a wire set that goes from the top cover to the unit, leave read error it in place), then the bottom cover (this is where you break the warranty seal, so if your's is less than 90 days old, I don't recommend this). Now replace the top cover (so it's easier to work with) and place the unit upside down, again with the expansion bay facing you. Remove 2 screws, one holds the metal shield in place, the other holds the expansion bay together. There is a ribbon cable disc read error between the bay and the unit. Have a friend hold the bay upright, exposing a hole that exposes some of the DVD drive workings. Here it is, the laser adjusting screws. They are 2 silver screw looking things, with a black screw between them. The right silver thing controls the CD, the left controls the DVD. I turned mine 1/8 clockwise turn each. The thing I read said to adjust 1/16 to 1/8 turn and try. I partially re-assembled mine after just 1/8 turn and EUREKA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cleaned it out a bit and did the final assembly, and now my PS2 works every time. I even put in a CD that was previously a coaster it was so scratched and it read it first try. teartray, Mar 24, 2007 #1 fatfatso Guest Doesn't always work buddy. If your dvd coils gets worse again, you are done! All coils will burn out as a function of time. When you use them too much, they got weaken (job security fo Sony). fatfatso, Mar 24, 2007 #2 teartray Member Joined: Mar 10, 2007 Messages: 52 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 16 I have enjoyed many hours of gameplay since fixing it and it's still running perfectly and hasn't failed to read a single disc yet. However, thanks for the kn
