Windows XP PRO from my backup disk and keep getting the same message, NTLDR is missing. I realize the disk is not a boot disk and that is the reason for the message. The only operating system I have available that can boot is Windows 3.11. Can I load that operating system on the computer and than load XP PRO or am I wasting my time? Is there any other thing I might try? Remember, I have no operating system on the computer now and the computer I am using as I write this does not have a CD writer. I can download to a floppy disk though. I appreciate any help I can get. RELEVANCY SCORE 200 Preferred Solution: Loading A Non-boot Disk On New Hard Drive I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success. I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc. You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
A: Loading A Non-boot Disk On New Hard Drive I believe you will need a retail copy of XP in order to install XP on this HD.If the version of XP you had was oem and validated using another motherboard previously or preinstalled on a computer by a computer manufacturer or assembler you will not be able to validate the XP installation.Only a retail version is transferable. If you have a retail CD and the 25 digit key number and the previous installation is no longer active you may be able to transfer your license to this new computer (Microsoft considers a new motherboard a new computer).
