My initial Hackintosh was an ASUS X9P79 with 3 SSDs: Kingston 250 and two Intel 120's. All worked just fine. I'm not sure when it started to happen, but I'm sure I did something... But, upon boot I started to get: "EBIOS Read Error: Error 0x4" It cycled through over and over until it got to: "File hfs.c Line 732" and "This is a non-recoverable error: System Halted." Unplugging the drives one by one identified the culprit - one of the Intels. I figured "screw it" as I couldn't do anything to fix it. No mater what, if that drive was in the box, it would error out no matter what device I chose to boot from or anything. My guess is that it locked when the system went to enumerate boot devices. It actually showed up in BIOS, but that was it. I switched to a Gigabyte X79-UD5. After getting it all rebuilt, I put this drive in and got the same error. Since I used to do this with SCSI drives when they would lock (before hitting them with a shoe) I tried it here. I booted up with the drive unplugged, went into Disk Utility, and plugged the SATA port in while the system was running - sure enough, it came up and showed me the partition. I reformatted it with a fresh partition and all is good. Thought I would pass it on. (You must log in or sign up to reply here.) Have tried the steps outlined in a number of guides, and have a http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/general-mac-os-x-discussion/7514-boot-drive-ebios-read-error-error-0x04-osx-not-recognised.html couple of issues / questions: My hardware is - 1 * small USB and 1 * 16GB Sandisk Cruzer USB 1. On my boot disk DellEFI 1.1 - unzipped and copied contents to root (with subdirs) DellMiniBoot v8.02b1 - unzipped and copied contents to root (with subdirs) syslinux -ma h: and copied over mobilebroadband and aboutthismac When I boot it I get the initrd and all dots, then it comes up with about 10 of these errors: EBIOS Read Error: Error 0x04 Block 8844999: Sectors 64 I have rebuilt the drive several times, and also tried a different USB stick but still the same error. 1. On my OSX drive Also a point of clarification, and please dont laugh ! Do I need to copy the dmg file to the other USB or expand it to be the actual folder structure ? I have tried both but neither are recognised on the bootloader. (tylping in 81,82 etc finds nothing) I have taken an image of the OSX retail disk, and saved it to my PC using transmac. I then uncompressed it using transmac again and then copied it over to the large USB. I then added the OSXDVD.zip contents to the root of the drive. What am I doing wrong ?
