Does that mean that I can safely use the disk after a low level format & it won't have any issues? If you provided more information both about the model of drive you are using as well as about the errors the Samsung utility reported you might get better answers. Without knowing the details of your situation all we can really do is speculate. Well, that, and perhaps wave our hands wildly in the air for emphasis. LBA is an acronym for Logical Block Addressing. the hard drive searching with a low click clocking sound a few times then it hangs. I ran Testdisk in Mepis and found the partition after a quick search. I can view all the files in the partition. I got a http://superuser.com/questions/166177/hard-drive-lba-error-how-to-proceed warning "Incorrect number of heads/cylinder 16 (NTFS) != 255 (HD)." I forgot the warning and wrote a new FAT. Tried to reboot in XP with the same result as before but now it searches the disk a lot longer then before. Tried testdisk again but this time it reports a write error when I try to write a FAT. It also reports a read error at 0/0/7 (lba=6) I was able to copy some files to another partition within Testdisk. I am a https://forums.techguy.org/threads/dead-hard-drive.897459/ bit confused as the disk and partition seems to be ok, but it can't be mounted in Linux and makes the XP boot freeze. Can it be saved or should i just try to copy the content to a new HD? Thanks! But, somehow Windows 7 stopped to start and the screen would not move ahead of the cursor blinking after the initial BIOS screen. So, I formatted the HDD using Gparted and removed Windows 7 completely along with Ubuntu as neither was bootable. But, now my HDD is listed as unallocated under Gparted as well it lists that there is no partition table. So, while I try to create one I get an Input/Output read error.
