You will not be able to fix it with software. A data recovery firm may be able to disassemble the drive and recover some of the data from the platters, but this will probably be an expensive endeavor. I started the copy process before bed (external drive working properly, files were visible), and when I woke up the next morning I was not able to see any files. Did some research and determined the HD was set to RAW somehow. Booted to the USB drive onto my older Dell laptop running Win7, and was able to run testdisk and view my files in parted magic. Whew! They were still there.
