enlightening experience with FB 0.90.0 and quest.bas, I thought I'd try to compile another old GWBASIC game to FreeBasic. This one (wizard.bas, aka Wizard's visual basic runtime error 9 subscript out of range Castle) was a little tricker, because it did some strange things such as using the same variable name for multiple fields (strings, numbers, and arrays). However, I persevered and got to where all the variable conflicts were resolved, https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38160 but the last time I compiled the code, I got this:Code: Select allc:\sourcecode\win32\winwiz\history Yes, Master?? > fbc wizardfb.bas
Aborting due to runtime error 12 ("segmentation violation" signal)
Also, it did not generate an EXE file during this process...This code runs fine in DosBox/GWbasic, at least during the early game.I have no idea how to begin debugging this issue!! Can someone here give me some pointers?? If it failed at runtime, I would know how to proceed, but http://www.freebasic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21371 when it fail during compile, I'm at a loss. This code *does* use the ON...GOTO construct, but I don't think it is reaching any of those at this point...Here is a link to the sources, if anyone cares to look at it:home.comcast.net/~derelict/files/wizardfb.bas Top counting_pine Site Admin Posts: 5634 Joined: Jul 05, 2005 17:32 Location: Manchester, Lancs Re: Aborting due to runtime error 12 Quote Postby counting_pine » Jul 15, 2013 4:05 For compiler crashes, one thing you can try is to try and locate where the compiler was before the crash by adding #print __line__ at various intervals. But in this instance the compiler reaches the end of the source file before crashing.I commented out all the ON GOTOs, and the compiler didn't crash, so I suspected the 0.90 regression was the cause. On fetching and compiling the new fbc with the fix, the compiler no longer crashed but found these errors:Code: Select allwizardfb.bas(234) error 71: Array access, index expected
3010 X=A : Y=B : Z=C
^
wizardfb.bas(710) error 71: Array access, index expected, before '-'
7770 IF H > T-60 GOTO 7810
^
wizardfb.bas(713) error 71: Array access, index expected
7800 H=T
^Without examining the source too closely, I suspect these are just further instances of variable/array name clashes. Top GmailCat Posts: 11 J
