The error presents apparently at random. I can use the application for an hour, and then zoom out to a small scale and boom. The Windows Event viewer seems to point to an issue with python. But am not sure how

First I looked for a python27.dll under my C:\Windows\system32 and didn't find one. Not sure why Arc was looking for one there, but I then tried to Repair the ArcGIS installation. No luck. The problem persisted. Then I uninstalled python from my ArcGIS installation. Problem solved. (The issue had become quire reproducible. Zooming to a scald of 1:100,000 on a given map doc would always cause the runtime error. Wit

After clicking OK to dismiss the error message, the application typically continues to run and function normally without crashing. However, if the process has a dependency on the Microsoft C Runtime Library version 9, the process may crash. The duplicate copy is typically exposed to the application when a folder with a copy of msvcr90.dll exists in the PATH environment variable.Viewing maps or layers with Python labeling expressions, opening the Python window, and working with geoprocessing tools can all cause Python to load, which can trigger loading the incorrect Microsoft C Runtime Library version 9, msvcr90.dll. Some APIs use exceptions to manage errors. Error codes are documented here for reference, but for clarity refer to the specific API references for methods that throw exceptions or return error information. In most cases the API will defer error functionality to the objects and services available on the native platform (for example, NSError on Cocoa, ArcGISRuntimeException in .Net, Java, and Android) There are distinct classes of errors, depending on the service invoked. As the architecture dictates, errors may originate from the API, the runtime core supporting the API, or the service (the servers the API connects to implementing certain services.) Check the error domain if this is information useful to your app. In most cases you only need the error code to determine the cause of the error and possible remedy.Error domains The API exposes several error domains. A domain is a segregated area of the API, usually bound to a framework, internal library, or module of functionality. The error domain helps focus the error to a specific area of functionality within the API.
