The module function points to an Excel file. The function is calling the Excel file through the command line like this: Shell "Excel \\server\dir\filename.xls", vbMaximizedFocus The DB opens, the function gets triggered, and I get Run-timer error '53': File not found I know that the Excel file exists, and I am able to open it. I have the security permissions to be able http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20523375/error-53-file-not-found to access folders in the filepath. What I already tried: decompile+compact+recompile the DB, using the instructions here. I am still getting the same error. Can anyone suggest other causes/solutions? minor edit - content remains the same. vba ms-access access-vba share|improve this question edited Dec 11 '13 at 16:05 HansUp 79.2k114371 asked Dec 11 '13 at 15:39 sion_corn 1,70351838 Are you able to access the file \\server\dir\filename.xls from a file explorer window? –Shiva Dec 11 '13 at 15:40 yes, i am able to. –sion_corn Dec 11 '13 at 15:41 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted I can't reproduce the file not found error. I adapted your code as follows, but it opens the workbook file without error. Const cstrFile = "\\HP64\share\Access\temp.xls" If Len(Dir(cstrFile)) = 0 Then MsgBox "File '" & cstrFile & "' not found." Else Shell "Excel " & cstrFile, vbMaximizedFocus End If Alternatively, you could create an Excel application instance and then open the file. However I'm skeptical whether that would avoid the not found error. Dim objExcel As Object 'Excel.Application Set objExcel = CreateObject("Excel.Application") objExcel.Visible = True objExcel.Workbooks.Open cstrFile ' do stuff here objExcel.Quit Set objExcel = Nothing share|improve this answer answered Dec 11

This suggests that when you start Excel you have a workbook loading which runs a macro upon opening. That macro is looking for a file that doesn't exist. The workbooks that load upon startup will be in one of two places: - Either in a folder called xlStart, the location of which will vary from version to version (you can find it through the Find or Search application on the Start menu runtime error 53 of Windows); or - In any folder that you have specified under Tools -> Options -> General. (The name of the field containing the folder will be different in different versions of Excel; it's always wise to specify which version you're using when posting a question. In Excel XP (2002) it's "At startup, open all files in:" In 97, I think it's called "Alternate Startup File Location". You may have nothing in there (most people don't), in which case don't worry about it.) Using Windows Explorer, move all of the files in those directories to somewhere else. Now start Excel, and open them one at a time until you get the error. That's the culprit. All you need to do is put all of your other files back except for that one. There's also a possibility that the error is being triggered by an add-in. Go to Tools -> Add-Ins and uncheck each entry that you see there. Close and reopen Excel, then try loading the add-ins back. Again, this will help you find the one that you should leave out. --------------------------------------------------------- Hank Scorpio scorpionet who hates spam is at iprimus.com.au (You know what to do.) * Please keep all replies in this Newsgroup.
