The only one I find about a hotfix for a run time error 40006 is for Visual Studios, and those have Service Packs available to resolve the problem. The only server application to come with WindowsXP is Internet Information Services (IIS). -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Associate Expert - WindowsXP Expert Zone www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone Windows help - www.rickrogers.org "Sincerely, Big AL"

My VB app checks if there's an update, and if there is an update available, it uses winsock to download & run the exe. runtime error at Unfortunately, it generates the following error on some computers while not on others: Run-time error '40006'; Wrong protocol or connection state for the requested transaction or request. And I cannot figure out for the life of me, why it does this only on some of my computers but not all--they all seem to have the same components, etc. Nonetheless, Of course this should not happen on any computer. help! Obinice07-21-2005, 11:21 PMWhenever my program tries to send data and the other program has terminated the connection, I get the below error message and the program crashes. I am new to this, and don't know how to tell my program to simply show an error message that will tell the user that the other end has cut them off. Could you help? Having say, a message box appear to say "Other user not responding" rather than this error, would be really really excellent..... Run-time error '40006': Wrong protocol or connection state for the requested transaction or request :) b0b07-22-2005, 07:22 AMCould you show some code (including the line with the error) bit easier to help. At a guess you should always check winsocks state before sending. If Winsock1.state = sckConnected Then Winsock1.SendData someData Else Msgbox "Other user not responding" End If Obinice07-22-2005, 12:17 PMThat's great :) Do you know the code to say if the port's not already in use then start listening else pop up the message box saying the ports in use already 'cause the program crashes if the ports already in use..... you're uber helpful btw ^_^ b0b07-22-2005, 01:03 PMHave you coded the Winsock_Error event? it will allow you to handle a lot of errors. Theres no explicit way to tell if a port is in use with winsock, but there's a lot of ports so if you always choose one above 10,000 (below this can be reserved by the operating system) there shouldn't be a problem. To handle the errors just use a select case in the error event on the error numbers you want. Obinice07-22-2005, 02:02 PMHere's what I have for my Winsock_Error: Private Sub Winsock_Error(ByVal Number As Integer, Description As String, ByVal Scode As Long, ByVal Source As String, ByVal HelpFile As String, ByVal HelpContext As Long, CancelDisplay As Boolean) I'm pretty much a newbie to stuff so when you say "To handle the errors just use a select case in the error event on the error numbers you want" im not quite sure what you mean, lol. b0b07-22-2005, 02:39 PMYou only really need the select case i
