Dec 6, 2012 William Lefkovics | Windows IT Pro EMAIL Tweet Advertisement A: As I wrote in "What Features Were Removed for Outlook 2010?" the Offline Folders file (.ost) integrity check tool, ScanOST (scanost.exe), was removed when Microsoft Outlook 2010 was shipped. What do you do when you're experiencing problems, such as minor mailbox synchronization issues or missing items, with Offline Folders in Outlook 2010? Ideally, http://windowsitpro.com/outlook/q-how-do-i-repair-ost-file-offline-if-theres-no-scanostexe-outlook-2010 you do the same thing you've always done: You delete the local .ost file and have Outlook rebuild it from scratch when you recreate the connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server in the user's profile. Offline Folders, after all, are just a local Outlook copy of an Exchange mailbox. ScanOST was an option before Outlook 2010 and was used only on .ost files. It helped with the same issues as ScanPST (scanpst.exe), as well as server synchronization problems. But what if you're really offline and you're having problems with your .ost file, such as items seemingly missing or inaccessible? First, the content on the server remains, so you essentially have a backup. Your .ost file, however, could hold substantial content that you haven't yet synchronized with the server and that you don't wish to lose. ScanPST is still available and can be run against .pst files and .ost files. ScanPST doesn't need access to an Exchange mailbox, as ScanOST does, although it doesn't check synchronization issues. The first step in checking your offline .ost file would be to export the contents to a .pst file as a backup. The Import and Export option in Outlook 2010 isn't located in the most intuitive place. You'll find it at File, Open, Import, as F

However, there's a new (slicker?) way to recover a corrupt OST file. Note that this issue usually applies only to uses who are synchronizing data with another server like Exchange or Google. Symptom: Open Outlook, and upon dismissing a calendar item you get the error, "Errors have been scanpst outlook detected in the file C:\{path to file}\outlook.ost. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help" Solution:Right-click the folder and then click "Properties". In the dialog box that appears, click the "Clear Offline Items" button and then click "OK". On the Outlook 2010 ribbon, click the Send/Receive tab, then "Update outlook 2010 ost Folder" Otherwise, we recommend that you delete the .ost file and let Outlook download information again from Exchange. The exception is if you have local data that is not present on the server. In that case, we recommend that you export the data to an Outlook Data File (.pst), delete the .ost file, allow the server data to download again, and then import the .pst file data by using the Do not import duplicates option that can be accessed through the Open option on the File tab. scottcarson View Public Profile Send a private message to scottcarson Find all posts by scottcarson « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Thread Tools Show Printable Version Email this Page Display Modes Linear Mode Switch to Hybrid Mode Switch to Threaded Mode Posting Rules You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts BB code is On Smilies are On [IMG] code is On HTML code is Off Forum Rules Forum Jump User Control Panel Private Messages Subscriptions Who's Online Search Forums Forums Home General Forum Before Signing Up Marketplace Feedback/Suggestions Storm Applied Technologies Tutorials Email Help General Technical Issues/Questions Outages/Service Problems Eco-PA
