the package limitations have been exceeded which may correspond to swells in traffic during the day. When there is an error with a .htaccess file, all pages of the website will display a 500 error indefinitely until the .htaccess file is corrected or removed. As little as a simple spelling mistake or syntax error will cause a 1and1 dedicated server 500 error. If the .htaccess file has been edited recently, replace the file with a backup. If no backup is available, try to undo the changes to the file if you can remember what has been altered. If those options are not feasible, you can try commenting lines one by one by placing a pound sign(#) at the beginning of the line to comment it out. Then try to access a page of the site. Continue to add the pound sign to more lines until the 500 error stops which should help you pinpoint which line needs to be corrected. I am currently using 1and1 as a domain host. I have liked most everything they offer with one major exception. Their LOG file system is junk. Is there anyway for me to generate my own log files? I am on a shared server, http://forum.associateprograms.com/ftopic7511.html but could upgrade to a dedicated server. The current log file system generates a weekly LOG file. I do not have write access to the LOG folder. Read Only. When it generates a new LOG file it deletes the last one making it virtually http://www.thespanner.co.uk/2007/08/06/1and1-suck/ impossible to get all of the days LOGged. On my old webhost they generated a very nice daily log file. I could rename or delete old LOGs off of the server at my convenience. All I want is to be able to do server error is see where the traffic is coming from and what it is doing and where it is going. Does anyone have any recommendations or similar experiences with 1and1? ajknudson Posts: 3Joined: Mon Nov 22, 2004 5:31 pmLocation: 3rd large rock from sun Website Mon Nov 22, 2004 5:43 pm What type of hosting do you currently have? I use 1and1 and get daily log files, that are then zipped into a weekly log file. I use AWStats to process the file, and it handles the daily and internal server error weekly stats fine... edburdo Posts: 1740Joined: Mon Jul 14, 2003 12:08 pmLocation: Bangor, Maine Website 1and1.com - Nazis of the internet Thu Jun 23, 2005 4:15 am Nazi's of the Internet. 1and1 is the WORST host/registrar on the web. with a tech guy at 1and1 and the it went something like this:- Me:Hi I've been trying to get a few mod_rewrite rules going on my server but I keep getting a internal server error, I've tested it on 2 development machines and it works fine. How can I access the apache error log? Tech guy:Could you give me the address of your script Me:Yeah but all I need is the apache error log. I give the address. Tech guy:You are not allowed access to the apache error log on your server because it's a shared hosting package. Me:Oh that's a bit daft, every other hosting package I've been on allows you access to the error log. Could you read me what the error says for that particular url? Tech guy:Yes no problem, I'll just put you on hold. Me: 11 minutes later, can you read me the error? Tech guy:I'm sorry I'm not allowed to read you that error. Me: … Me: What? Eh? First of all it's madness that I can't read the apache error logs on my server, second you have to actually read them to me, third you can't read the error to me that I need??? WTF Tech guy: Thank you for calling 1and1 The entry '1and1 suck' was posted on August 6th, 2007 at 10:33 am and last modified on March 6th, 2008 at 3:30 pm, and is filed under php, Security. Yes.. these guys are crazy. Gareth Heyes writes: No. 3 -- August 6th, 2007 at 12:15 pm Yeah I might try that next time I don't understand how these people get jobs. B.
