That should give him back access to the system. Solved trying to configure ODBC to connect to SQL Server state 42000 2005 - fails Posted on 2007-02-12 MS SQL Server 1 Verified Solution 2 Comments 1,624 Views Last Modified: 2007-12-19 We just migrated an old applicaton from a Windows NT box to Windows 2003. We saved the old database on the NT box and restored it to SQL Server 2005. It appeared that everything came over correctly. Now when I go into the odbc sqlstate 42000 new Windows 2005 box and configure the DSN the way it was before, and put the ID I used before, I get a message: Connection failed: SQLState: '42000' SQL Server Error: 4064 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Can anyone offer me some suggestions? The id was using did come over successfully and I'm not sure what to check next. On another computer, I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and made an exact copy of the .mdf file from the first computer, on the second computer. I attached that database in the Management Studio without error. On that machine I could, as well, configure an ODBC connection with the username/password and connect to it just fine. The problem is when I want to point the ODBC connection on one computer, to the database on the other computer. I have used the surface area configuration tool to allow remote connections, and started the browser service. When I try to create the ODBC connection, I click the drop-down to show servers, and the remote server appears in the list, which I then choose. I specify the default database. I get this error: Connection Failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456 [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'alpha'. Connection failed: SQL State: '42000' SQL Server Error: 4064 [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot open user default database. Login failed. in other words, the connection works just fine on a local computer, but the connection, all else being the same, poi
