Error encountered when opening QuickBooks. If you encounter an Unrecoverable Error when attempting to open your QuickBooks file and the error message reads quickbooks error code list “QuickBooks has encountered a problem and needs to close”, QuickBooks has experienced a ‘critical application fault'. This type of error typically displays one of 50 different numeric error codes, each containing 10-digits in a “5-digits space 5-digits” (##### https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/kb/unrecoverable-error/SLN41065:INQUIRA.modal #####) sequence. Many times this type of Unrecoverable Error occurs upon start-up because you had too many windows open when you last closed the file. Because the “My Preference" for preserving 'desktop settings' is User driven, one user may be able to log-in to the file, while another user may not be able to log-in. One fix is to prevent QuickBooks from attempting to re-open all the windows (left open at the last log-out) http://www.intuitiveaccountant.com/blogs/from-the-editor/qb-quickfix--unrecoverable-error-when-opening-quickbooks-fil/ during the start up process; to do this: 1. Double-click on the QuickBooks Icon while pressing the Alt key. If you are prompted for your User password: a. Release the Alt key on your keyboard; b. Enter your password, click OK; c. Now press the Alt key again while the file continues to open. 2. Release the Alt key only after the file is completely open. (Note: Once the file opens you should consider changing the “My Preference” setting for saving your desktop, or simply learn to always 'close all windows' inside QuickBooks before you log out.) If your Company file still cannot be opened using any user’s log-in, the next thing to try is to see if QuickBooks can open a 'sample' file. With QuickBooks closed: 1. Double-click the QuickBooks icon, and then immediately hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard. 2. Keep the CTRL key held down until QuickBooks opens the No Company Open screen. 3. Once you are at the No Company Open screen, click the Open a sample file button, 4. Now choose any of the sample company files in the list. (Note: If you are asked to restore and update the sample file, click Yes.) If your company file never opened, but
2012 R14 Unrecoverable Error When Opening - Fix July 1, 201329 Comments Written by Charlie Russell Intuit released QuickBooks 2012 R14 just a few weeks ago, and many (but not all) users found that once they updated the could not open their QuickBooks company file. If they tried, https://www.sleeter.com/blog/2013/07/quickbooks-2012-r14-unrecoverable-error-when-opening-fix/ they would get an “unrecoverable error” and QuickBooks would shut down. Intuit offered a workaround, but now they are pushing out a fix for the problem. The original workaround was to force QuickBooks to open without opening any windows that you left open in the program. You would double-click on the QuickBooks icon while holding down the ALT key – QuickBooks would start up without opening any windows. The problem (in this case) had to do with unrecoverable error the “Home Page” window being opened – in some situations this would cause the program to crash. Now we have a better fix, with a patch that Intuit is pushing out. If you have updated to QuickBooks 2012 R14 and you get an “unrecoverable error” when opening the file: Start QuickBooks by double-clicking on the QuickBooks icon while holding down the CTRL key. Note, this is NOT the “ALT” key as before. QuickBooks will not open a company quickbooks unrecoverable error file if you start this way, you’ll get the “No Company Open” screen. Select Help from the main menu. Select Update QuickBooks from the Help menu. Click the Update Now tab. Make sure that the “New Features” option in the list has a check mark by it (others can be checked, that doesn’t matter). Click the Get Updates button. Once the update is complete, close QuickBooks. This should resolve the problem and you will be able to open your company file. Intuit has multiple methods of sending out updates. We have the normal “R-level” updates (like R14) that are delivered through the Update feature, and that can also be manually updated by downloading a “web patch” file. You can tell this has been installed by pressing F2 in QuickBooks and looking at the revision information. We have the “critical fix” updates, also called “ULIP” updates, which are also delivered through the Update feature. You don’t have a “web patch” for this that you can share to other computers. You can’t tell if these have been installed, you can only tell if these have been downloaded to your system (you will see info in the F2 screen). These are only available in QuickBooks 2013 and later (see this article). We have what are called “Off Cycle Delivery” (or OCD, perhaps an unfortunate choice of initials) updates, which are delivered through the Up
