Agoi (2003) also described preposition as a word or group of words used with a noun or noun equivalents to show the link between that noun which it governs and another word. The prepositions however are grouped into simple, participial and phrasal types. Preposition like other parts of speech are frequently misused. This misuse which is otherwise referred to as error. It is an instance of deviation from the norm of correct usage (Opara, 2001). One major error observed in the students writing and everyday speech is prepositional error. The notion of correctness as far as prepositional use is concerned depends on linguistic competence and performance of the learner or speaker. Analyses of these errors especially in second language learning/teaching situations is more or less a learning device. This explains why Yankson (2000) stresses that error in language learning are significant. The effective use of preposition adds to writer’s or speaker’s communicative competence and linguistic performance; many students used preposition carelessly as if it is not rule governed. Abstract: This study aimed to compare the deviations in the prepositional usage of first year secondary school learners of English as a Second http://searchwarp.com/swa129884.htm Language (ESL) in public and private schools. Informal interviews were conducted with the teachers of the subjects for information on the students’ proficiency background as well as the topics they discuss in their English classes. A pilot testing was conducted in a class of 41 high school freshmen of Don http://ejournals.ph/article.php?id=1056 Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong to measure the time limit and expected output of the students. A formal free-writing test was administered in two separate classes with a total respondents of 99 (51 public school students and 48 from private schools). The outputs were checked through manual checking and were measured statistically through T-test. The findings revealed that despite lengthier outputs, private school students committed less errors in their compositions than those from the public schools. However, the errors did not have significant difference statistically. The study also proved the researcher’s hypothesis that L1 (a respondent’s first language) interferes in the use of English prepositions among ESL (English as Second Language) learners.
