Also, I had some thumbs.db files get corrupted (for network drives) and on local drives Windows 7 stores all the thumbs in one central db at The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db. I normally use something like CCleaner to clean the cache files out. If that doesn't work, I've had programs hijack the file association and that killed the Windows thumb generation. That is a little more complex, and I had a hard time solving that. Hope this helps. share|improve this answer answered Sep 22 '10 at 5:59 Scott McClenning 3,2681018 I'll check these out, great answer and thanks. common problem in Windows. Sometimes Windows Explorer doesn't show thumbnail previews for images and other files as shown in following screenshot: It might be due to a bug or http://superuser.com/questions/191136/fix-image-previews-and-thumbnails-in-explorer-on-windows-7 the user accidentally turned off thumbnails using Folder Options or System Properties. Anyway if you are also facing this problem, you can use following easy fix to show thumbnails again in Windows Explorer: 1. Open Windows Explorer, click on Organize button present in command bar and select "Folder and search options". 2. Now go to View tab and make sure http://www.askvg.com/fix-windows-explorer-doesnt-show-thumbnail-previews-in-windows-vista-and-7/ "Always show icons, never thumbnails" option is not enabled i.e. its disabled. If the option is enabled, uncheck the checkbox and click on Apply button. It should fix the problem. If you can't access Folder Options, you can use following alternative method: 1. Type sysdm.cpl in RUN or Start Menu search box and press Enter. It'll open System Properties. 2. Go to "Advanced" tab and click on "Settings" button in "Performance" section. 3. Now make sure "Show thumbnails instead of icons" option is enabled. If its not enabled, enable the option and click on Apply button. That's it. Now you should get thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer without any problem as shown in following screenshot: Share this article: Facebook | Twitter | Google+ | Reddit | Tell a friend Posted in: Troubleshooting, Windows 7, Windows Vista Other similar articles that may interest you Restarter: Restart Explorer, Uxsms Service and Kill Not Responding Tasks in Windows Windows Explorer Always Opens in Libraries View in Windows 7, How to Change Target Folder? Thumbnails in Explorer disappeared for me. It might have coincided with me installing VLC Player on Vista. Either way, it sucked because I http://www.hanselman.com/blog/FIXMissingThumbnailsForVideosWMVAVIMPGInWindowsExplorer.aspx had family photos with thumbnails next to videos taken with the same camera with no thumbnails. It's no fun to lose functionality. While poking around in the Registry trying to http://www.problogbooster.com/2016/04/Video-Thumbnail-Not-Showing-Missing-Preview-No-Working-Windows-File-Explorer-Fix-Solved.html fix this issue, I noticed that Thumbnails for AVI files worked, while no others did. The only difference with that extension was this registry key:[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}" So, I made a registry file windows 10 with this entryfor each extensionI wanted thumbnails for. Merged it into the registry and, lo and behold, I have thumbnails again. The file is below. As an aside, while I was trying to fix this, I also picked up a codec pack called the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) and noticed while running through its settings that it had an option to thumbnails not showing "fix perceived types." I wish I'd known this last week when I fixed THAT problem with missing Media Center Thumbnails. Switching over tothe CCCP also had the added benefit of letting me watch my MP4 encoded PSP (Playstation Portable) files in Windows Media Player, and added Thumbnails in Explorer for MP4s as well via their settings dialog. Once I got MP4 working I exported those settings and appended to them to this file. Also, by the way, did you know that the new location of the Explorer Thumbnail Cache is down here?
