And today, I came across some reports about a failed Windows Update. Naturally, I began to check for updates, and found nothing. It was only after a closer investigation that I came to know that KB3081424 is the update in question. This was a bit surprising as I installed the updates on my computers, without running into any issues. Users say that the update is http://www.filecritic.com/how-to-fix-0x80070020-error-failed-to-install-windows-update-kb3081424-in-windows-10/ not downloading properly, and that their systems rebooted mid-way during the download, and that this boot looping continued, whenever the update was downloading. You can download Windows Update KB3081424 manually from the links below: x86 (32-bit systems) x64 (64-bit systems) Of even that fails to install, read on for a fix. Here is the Microsoft Answers forum, at which several users have reported about the issue. And fortunately one user has found a solution for this issue. How to fix 0x80070020 error (failed to install Windows Update KB3081424) Click on Start and type Regedit, and click on the tesult to open the Windows Registry Editor. (You can also press Windows + R, and type regedit and hit Enter). Now, on the left pane of the registry, navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList (refer to the above image) WARNING: The next step is very tricky, and I advise caution. If you aren't sure about finding the correct registry entries mentioned below, backup the registry first, if you are still worried, just skip this workaround and wait for Microsoft to fix the issue.
