I have a very large collection of avi files, many of which all of the sudden stopped playing. I don't know if it is a virus or if I just have corrupted files. I deleted my codecs reinstalled them rolled back wmp everything, I am lost. I have recently switched operating systems (XP to xp pro) https://www.moviecodec.com/video-codecs/windows-media-player-wont-play-mpeg-movie-file-7616/ on a new drive. My primary drive is my F and not my C which most programs automaticly default to. I don't know if that is a factor in my problems. The idea of losing gigs of tv shows just kills me. I just wanted to know if anyone experienced similar problems or had any ideas. Should i go to BIOS and switch the f and the c drive (in name) or install a certain codec, or roll back a certain driver? anything would help me thank you 06-08-2005 03:02 AMNOLAZACH Feedback Have had a similar problem, about two dozen of my mpegs have stopped working, all at the same time (they arent even showing thumbnails anymore). I've tried uninstalling some windows updates, but no avail. I did check the mpegs on a friend's computer (which didnt have any of the newer updates on it) and the files ran fine. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out yet which of the windows updates are the troublemakers. I'm in the same boat though, I'd rather not lose any of my music vids, especially since they are not really corrupted. 06-29-2005

I was able to play them just a few weeks ago but now for some reason they stop as soon as they open up. They will play in sound recorder, Real windows media player but not wmp. Wmp will still play videos and .wma files. If I put all my music files in the play list, it will skip down through all the .wav files until it finds a .wma. Most of these files were created by me using sound recorder and they all worked a few weeks ago. Im running XP Pro, SP2 with all updates. Mar 31, 2006 #5 rounder TS Rookie oh yea, one thing I forgot was, whenever I click a wav file, it opens wmp, but then it tries to download a codec for it, then I get the error downloading codec message. I also get that message whenever I play an Mpg file, but even though it says error downloading codec it will stil play the video file. I also cannot stream video files anymore of the net. This all happened at once i think.
