They say defragging the registry helps, but it didn't in my case. badge a b \ Driver 24 October 2009 23:46:42 Hmmm, I had that exact error due to an XP system crashing so often. I did a manual repair of the registry on that machine, but I thought I remembered getting back to desktop to do the manual repair by repairing the boot sector first. Maybe not, but that 's if I remember correctly. I eventuall reloaded that computer and found the reason for all the crashing leading to registry corruption. A bad SATA cable. Fixed and running today. EDIT: With this particular error, a repair of the corrupted boot sector will get you back to desktop, but...it will not permanently fix the problem. Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius Tribus: McLean, VA Registered: Nov 9, 2000Posts: 7502 Posted: Mon Jun 22, 2009 9:49 am Need help with this problem..A user brought in their Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 laptop saying that it wouldn't boot up.After powering on, the Toshiba logo screen appears and then the screen goes blank for approximately 3 minutes. Then I get the message:"Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."The laptop came with XP pre-installed and a Toshiba Recovery CD. I figure the registry has probably become corrupted so I'll boot from the recovery cd and try a repair with the recovery console.PROBLEM: The laptop refuses to boot from the CD. I've confirmed in the BIOS that the CDROM is the first device the laptop boots from. I hear the cd spin up, but then it slows down and eventually stops, the screen stays blank for several minutes, and then the same "\windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt" error message appears. What I've tried: 1. Tried changing the boot order to boot from the harddrive and the cdrom. Both returned the same error message.2. Booted into the "Windows Advanced Boot Options" menu and tried booting from all three Safe Modes, the Last Known Good Configuration, the Directory Services Restore Mode, Debugging Mode, and Normal Windows Mode. All of them returned the same error message.3. Tried booting off a legit XP full install cd to do a fresh installation of XP, but the same thing happens as when I tried to boot off the recovery cd.. the drive spins up, then stops and the error message appears. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive so I can't boot off a floppy disk. If I can't boot off a cd then I'm not sure what else to do s
