Faulty memory can cause programs to crash, your system to freeze, and the occasional blue screen of death. Luckily, Windows 7 and Windows 8 (a download is available for Windows XP) come with a built in program to check your memory and diagnose what problems you may be experiencing. RAM may not be very expensive to replace, but running a quick memory test should be your first step. Running the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool in Windows XP While later versions of Windows come with a built in tool to test memory, if you're using Windows XP, you will have to download Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool from the internet. Unfortunately this program is no longer available from Microsoft's website. However, a similar program is available for free download from Softpedia.com. Running a memory test in Windows XP requires a few extra steps and the following items: Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool from Softpedia.com. A blank CD. A

ProductsHomearound the homeproductivityHow to Test the Memory in Windows XPHow to Test the Memory in Windows XPBy Jacob StoverWhen troubleshooting your computer, one of the most often overlooked areas is the computer's memory or RAM. Problems with your RAM can be difficult to diagnose symptomatically, and the tools to perform a proper RAM test are difficult to find. With the release of Windows Vista and later revisions of the windows operating system, RAM testing became an easily accessible system tool. If you're still using Windows XP, you'll be glad to know that Microsoft has made this tool available for XP users in an online format. Downloading and installing this tool is quite simple, and should only take a few minutes.Things You'll NeedCD Rom or Floppy DiskStep 1Navigate to the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (see Resources).Step 2Download the Memory Diagnostic Tool installer file to your local hard drive.Step 3Open the completed installer by double-clicking it.Step 4Select "Create Startup Disk" if you wish to use a floppy disk for this test, or "Save CD Image to Disk" if you wish to use a CD Rom for the test.Step 5Insert the appropriate disk type into your computer, then select "Create" to save the diagnostic tool to the selected disk.Step 6Restart your computer with the floppy disk or CD Rom still inserted into the computer. You should be automatically prompted to run the diagnostic tool when your computer starts up. The diagnostic will continue to run until you press the "Escape" key on the keyboard. It is recommended that you allow at least three "test passes" to complete before exiting the diagnostic. Any information gleaned during the diagnostic test will be displayed following the escape. You can use the memory test report to prove that your hardware is malfunctioning when working with the manufacturer for replacement or repair.References & ResourcesMicrosoft: How to Troubleshoot RAMWindows Memory Diagnostic ToolRelatedTechwalla's 2015 Holiday Buyers GuideProductivityThe 22 Coolest Gadgets We Saw at CES 2016ProductivityHow to Check the Memory on a Computer With CMDProductivityHow to Test RAM on Your ComputerProductivityWhat to Expect From a 2016 SmartphoneProductivityPlantronics Backbeat Fit vs Aftershokz Trekz TitaniumProductivityHOW WE SCOREABOUT USCONTACT USTERMS OF USEPRIVACY POLICY©2016
