might need to change the network settings for this connection." *sigh* I always hate it when things that worked one day suddenly and with seemingly no reason stop working. To my knowledge no updates have been applied to the server or to my Windows 7 machine in the time between yesterday and today. First I check to see if my Virtual XP instance can connect to the VPN. I then looked at my Windows 7 connectoid's options and did a little twiddling like disabling "include Windows logon domain" (not sure how that got enabled in the first place) and moved it from PPTP to Automatic (all it does is delay the logon time while it tries to figure out how to connect from among the available options but I figured it was worth a try). Still no luck. I created a brand new connectoid using the default values for everything and it still gave me Erorr: 720. Fortunately I have a secondary VPN that I use for just su

I'm not sure if this has something to do with my new laptop or if its something with Windows 8 itself. I'm happy to move to super user if that will be more appropriate. –campo Dec 29 '12 at 1:13 I don't know either, but look at what you have provided us - basically that a bunch of your PTPP VPNs throw a 720 error when you use Windows 8. Uh, alright, but that doesn't have any information that's going to be much good for troubleshooting. –HopelessN00b Dec 29 '12 at 1:22 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 13 down vote Got this problem after migrating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It was due to altered miniports which had to be reinstalled. Here is how I managed to do so: Locate broken miniports [yellow icon]: Device Manager -> View -> Show hidden devices. I get an error 720. I have been able to connect to the internet without VPN without difficulty. I was able to VPN in the past from this machine. A different machine on the same LAN suceeds. I have deleted and recreated the VPN connectoid. This vpn windows xp connection is through a LAN. I did get an error when I ran the netdiag /test:winsock. I have followed MS knowledge base instructions to delete IP registry keys. This error was corrected after the restoration of TCP/IP via the knowledge base article. I have run Win Fix. I went further and followed instructions to delete WAN Miniport registry keys and "hidden" devices in error 720 pptp the device manager and reinstall Miniport drivers for both PPTP and IP. I hoped that the problem was more related to the binding of PPTP to IP. I would like not to reinstall Windows. Any suggestions.
