We have 130 Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 computers that are configured to use a local Linux computer as their time server. Suddenly, we have 2 computers that are unable to start the "Windows Time Service". If you try and start the service, those computers display the error: "Could not start the Windows Time Service on SS-TESTER2. Error 126: The specified module could not be found" If you look in Event Viewer, this is displayed: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-performance/task-scheduler-error-1717-event-log-error-126/f9b98257-501f-4aec-bd65-6a5c7b517011 Event ID: 7023 Date: 4/3/2006 Time: 12:29:08 PM User: N/A Computer: SS-TESTER2 Description: The Windows Time service terminated with the following error: The specified module could not be found. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. The computers that are having the problem were working fine in the past. Rebooting the PCs doesn't help. Any ideas what we can do to http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/error-126-when-trying-to-start-windows-time-service-on-windows-xp-pro.2481525/ fix this? Steve , Apr 3, 2006 #1 Advertisements Ramesh, MS-MVP Guest Hi Steve Open C:\Windows\System32 folder and check if the file w32time.dll is present. If it's missing, then copy from C:\Windows\system32\DLLCache folder, or expand a fresh copy from the Windows XP CD-ROM (or from the ServicePackFiles\i386 folder in the hard disk, whichever has the recent version of the file). Under Computer Management - Services - The Event Log is set to Automatic, but is not running. I try to start it, it gives the following error:"Could not start the Event Log Service on Local Computer. Error 126: The specified module cannot be found". A similar error occurs with something called "Task Scheduler" in the same place - except this time the second part is "Error 1717: The interface is unknown".I think my issue is related to this forum post, http://minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12305. I looked at my Symantec Endpoint Protection quarantined files, which showed a virus called "Trojan.Dropper" had deleted a file named "eventlog.dll". As soon as I restore the file, though, it cleans it by deleting it again. Do
