restarted. After that, it would only BSOD on start up and continue to reboot. Same occurred when attempting a boot to safe mode. Ran a chkdsk in recovery console and it http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/windows-xp/9068-failed-installtion-d-i386-asms.html found errors, so ran it again with /r. another chkdsk came back clean. Machine booted to windows but then started tossing up a boat load of errors (Event 59 Source SideBySide to name one), plus some errors about not being able to load communication profiles. After googling and finding nothing really helpful, I decided to try repairing the Windows installation with the https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/ab8f38a3-9a89-4de8-b7ce-a0d9b4b8850b/access-denied-error-when-trying-to-repair-windows-xp-sp3?forum=itproxpsp XP disk. I diagnosed the original CD and a replacement media CD that was sent by Microsoft. Neither the original nor the replacement works. In fact booting from the new CD which is service pack 2 crashes the computer and restarting the windows setup simply rejects the new CD and asks for the old one. I cleaned the CD ROM disk drive with two laser cleaning diskettes, and with pressurized air with no effect. Only the original CD allows me access to the recovery command. During setup I am able to access the command line by pressing SHFT F10, as outlined in Microsoft Article ID: 311755, however regedit does not work although I can access all the drives and copy the files. I burned two CDs with the file I386\asms and completely burned a CD with a copy of the new and old CD and tried to fool the CD rom drive to no avail. I have opened a case with Microsoft technical support but they have been unable to determine the cause. Has any body experienced similar problem and can you help?
