When those users 502 proxy error dns lookup failure are trying to go to certain websites they get error "502 proxy error, the request is not supported (50)" message and 502 proxy error apache error reading from remote server they are not able to view the page. Data collection to resolve the issue In order to troubleshoot this type of issue, we need to run ISA data packager in repro mode using

the Web Proxy and Web Publishing template. The goal is to gather data while the client workstation is having this problem. Data analysis In the ISA Logs collected with ISA data packager we see failed connection attempt with result code as 50 as highlighted below (copying only the most relevant part of the log with action and result code). Failed www.contoso.com GET 50 http://www.contoso.com/abc/xyz.html http Domain\user1 In the 502 proxy error openshift network traces taken on the external NIC of the ISA server we can see that the http get request is going out as follows with all the headers and their corresponding values in the request sent. We need to compare the response that the web server sent for this request which is as follows: In the response, we can see all the headers and their corresponding values; the important header field that was missing in the request sent by the ISA server was “ContentEncoding” which is present in the web server response with value “gzip”. By default ISA server would send this header with values as gzip and deflate but in this case it is not sending that. To find out why ISA server is not sending this header information in the request we need to analyze the BPA report. ISABPA -> add-ins section -compression filter and verify if compression filter is disabled. Following is the output from the ISABPA when it’s disabled: Compression Filter Name =Compression Filter Version =4.0 Vendor =Microsoft (R) Corporation Description =Enables HTTP/HTTPS compression Enable this filter =False Direction =fpcFilterDirectionBoth Order =4 Relative Path =comphp.dll Priority =fpcFilterPriority_High Vendor Pa

a comment As referenced in my last post, I had a problem with viewing a website. Whenever someone

tried to view the site at work they got "Error Code: 502 Proxy Error. The request is not supported. (50)" The error is coming from Microsoft ISA Sever 2004, to https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/isablog/2010/05/24/error-502-proxy-error-the-request-is-not-supported-50-while-trying-to-access-websites-from-web-proxy-clients-behind-isa-server-2006/ fix this you need to enable the compression filter in ISA Server 2004 Configuration > Add-Ins > tab Web Filters > properties Compression Filter > select Enable This filer. > Ok > Apply. This not only fixed the 502 proxy error but also an issue with pages appearing "stripped down" ie only text, no images. Share this:ShareFacebookTwitterGoogleLike this:Like Loading... The problem apparently is caused by a GZIP compressed redirect. This redirect is received by ISA, but not returned to the client, the 502 error is returned instead and the TCP session with the web server closed. Changing the compression settings apparently has no impact. The ISA servers that do not work are running Surfcontrol. Not sure whether that has any 502 proxy error impact. Any suggestions? To solve it I turned on the compression filter (add-ins) afterthe sp3 installation. And my problematics sites started to work, include yours (www.voyages-sncf.com). If you want ISA Server to block such responses, configure the po
Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:24:13 -0400 http://www.ISAserver.org ------------------------------------------------------- The reason I ask is that shortly afterwards we started getting a bunch of people reporting that the MSN home page was all messed up. We found a computer that was experiencing this (not all of them were), and the page was showing up without graphics and everything was in one long column on the left side. Rebooting and having the firewall client re-detect the ISA server didn't help, but some of them seemed to correct themselves later. Apparently this is a cause for great concern, as they cannot do anything at all on the Internet if they cannot load the MSN home page. *grin* -----Original Message----- From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Harrison Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 12:41 AM To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: 502 Proxy Error. The request is not supported. (50) Kewl! ..now for the other folks in the audience... When compression is disabled, ISA will strip off the "Accept-encoding" header that the client sends. This is done to prevent the web site sending compressed responses because ISA can't apply HTTP body inspection to it. In this case (and several others, it seems), the web site sends compressed content anyway (it's a Sun server; waddayexpect?). Since ISA knows it can't process compressed HTTP bodies, it rejects it. Adding this value causes ISA to forward the "Accept-encoding" header and when the content is delivered compressed, ISA simply sends it back to the client as-is without inspecting it.
