Since this question is about a logged-in user, we can safely assume it's not a recovery scenario. –MSalters Apr 26 at 13:19 add a comment| 11 Answers 11 active oldest votes up vote 26 down vote accepted If you insert the wrong passwd $ passwd Changing password for rinzwind. when changing PW in Ubuntu? Anthony J https://linuxacademy.com/community/posts/show/topic/1881-explain-authentication-token-manipulation-error 02-17-2015 HI "New" it is because you are not http://www.ideaexcursion.com/2009/09/11/fixing-authentication-token-manipulation-error-when-changing-passwords-with-passwd/ entering the "current" password that it is asking for instead you are entering your desired new password. For example.. When you enter in not the correct "current" password which by default is 123456 user@anthony4:~$ su Password: authentication token You are required to change your password immediately (root enforced) Changing password for root. (current) UNIX password: su: Authentication token manipulation error user@anthony4:~$ When you enter the correct one: user@anthony4:~$ su Password: You are required to change your password immediately (root enforced) Changing password for authentication token manipulation root. (current) UNIX password: Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: root@anthony4:/home/user# You can see that it is asking for the "current" password first to verify you are who you say you are. New G 02-18-2015 Thanks. That'll happen I guess opening too many terminal. *doh* Reply Commit new skills to your local repo Join 70,000+ aspiring & expert engineers who trained at Linux Academy Join Now Features For Teams Library Blog Careers Community Archive About Terms of Service Privacy Policy Log In Join Now © Linux Academy. update my password on Ubuntu today and encountered a strange error. I thought I'd disseminate my solution in hopes that it saves other time. A few suggest playing with pwconvert, /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd, but my solution was much simpler. Basically, if you run passwd and receive the error,"passwd: Authentication token manipulation error", the culprit is likely Likewise Open. Unfortunately, even having this installed — but not configured — will prevent you from using passwd to update a local users's password. Fortunately, the fix is very easy if you don't actually use Likewise Open - just remove it from your system with this command: sudo apt-get remove likewise-open Confirm the prompts and after apt-get is done, you should be able to use passwd like normal. Thanks to Bug 302026 for guiding me to the solution. The bad news is that if you need to change the password of a local account and need Likewise Open installed, you might be out of luck. Thanks Nandu Matthew says: December 8, 2013 at 3:58 pm well, my issue was similarly resolved, but here's the differance. There was no "remount R/W" option in my recovery menu. If you go to FSCK, it will give you the option to mount as R/W, then it should return you to the recovery window, and if you look at the top it should now say read/write instead of read only then drop to root prompt, and passwd worked fine sarfraz alam says: January 14, 2013 at 4:19 am Sir i install Ubuntu on my laptop but i forget my password . when i try to rest them this error is occur "Authentication manipulation token error" . a lot of try i did but not success. kindly help me. tung says: August 25, 2012 at 1:57 am Thanks a lot! this post will help me homnius says: May 5, 2012 at 7:40 am ”passwd: Authentication token manipulation error” - system - hubuntu 12.04 I tried this method: andi says: February 20, 2012 at 3:33 am When you are in recovery mode: select option to remount read/write – press enter when remounted try “drop to root shell prompt” again and change password it did work actually – hope itll work for you too It reaally works!
