I had to manually hack the shadow file to lock the user. The user exists in passwd and shadwo file but am not sure why it gave me an error on passwd -l xxxx. It was kind of urgent but I took care of it the hard way. I still wonder why my command failed. I appreciate your help and quick response. harjitsingh View Public Profile Find all posts by harjitsingh #4 06-05-

After immediately selecting 'Drop into root shell prompt' I found the filesystem was mounted read only, which prevents resetting the password. Choosing the option to remount / as read/write and going back into the root shell prompt enabled the password change. The command to run prior to changing the password is: mount -rw -o remount / share|improve this answer edited Apr 29 '12 at 14:39 Community♦ 1 answered Jan 3 '12 at 23:29 Brandon 1,386172 Thank you, that worked. –Somebody Apr 7 '14 at 16:54 1 even after following these steps it will not
Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 17:46:56 +1000 I https://www.redhat.com/archives/rhl-list/2004-May/msg02512.html dont think passwd has any ldap capabilities, so attempting to lock an account stored in LDAP using passwd(1) wont work. I tried this here and got the same error as you. strace seems to show passwd looking in /etc/passwd for the given user. Dan On Wed, 2004-05-12 authentication token at 12:47, Mark A.
