process must be restarted in order to start this service. It can be circumvented by giving the new service its own process. Chasing a problem with BITS (XP Home), thru Microsoft, to no avail. Stumbled onto this webpage, gave BITS it's own process. Able to start the service and perform updates. I can't thank you enough. This has been driving me crazy and so has Microsoft! Reply GrahamDecember 21, 2013 at 7:21 pmPermalink Same problem exactly. I know a bit about computers but not enough. Had a clever guy helping and when I found this he said "lets give it a try, can't do any harm". I am so pleased he did because this has fixed it. Thanks a lot to the original poster, I am very grateful. Reply AaronAugust 10, 2014 at 7:46 pmPermalink You ROCK! This fixed my problem with the w32time service being unable to start due to an SID type conflict. on Windows XP you get an error 1290: 0x50a. Step 1: Reregister the Qmgr.dll and the Qmgrprxy.dll BITS files. To http://www.blizzardcomputers.com/bits-windows-xp-error-1290-0x50a/ do this, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/no-bits-cant-update.197574/ qmgr.dll, and then click OK two times. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll, and then click OK two times. Restart the computer. Step 2: Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type the following command, and background intelligent then click OK: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf Note: If you are prompted to insert the operating system CD, type %windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386 in the Copy files from box, and then click OK. Restart the computer. UPDATE: Just completed this step on a computer that had an empty C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 directory. I copied that directory from another XP computer background intelligent transfer that had SP3 installed. As some have noted in the comments they had to use their XP SP3 CD. Step 3: Manually start BITS. To do this, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. In the Service status area, click Start. If BITS does not start successfully, continue to step 4. (At this point your error will probably be 2 rather than 1290: 0x50a) Step 4: Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK: Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll Restart the computer. Step 5: Try to manually start BITS. Note: Set the BITS Startup type to "Automatic" instead of "Manual" as soon as you resolve this problem. To change the Startup type, follow these steps: a.Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK. b.Double-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service. c.In the Startup type box, click Automatic, and then click OK. I was working on a computer.. had to format and re-install Windows XP. I got most Windows Updates installed, but there are still a handful that won't install. I found out that it was probably because the BITS service wasn't running. I went to turn it on, and it wasn't even there. I tried to run sfc /scannow. It ran, but when it was finished, it just disappeared and didn't produce a log. Is there another way to install BITS? Nov 2, 2013 #1 LookinAround Ex Tech Spotter Posts: 6,491 +183 Clarify... If BITS still doesn't appear and start, you'll need a registry patch. Will have to find it and post back tomorrow Code: sc create BITS binpath= “c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs” start= delayed-auto /* EDIT */ You can copy/paste that command into the window if Quick Edit is enabled for the command window (use right click to paste int
