My case may be a little different starting bits service stuck than yours, but here is what I found/did. What tipped me off something was wrong was when I went to use MSE (microsoft security essentials) to scan a file, I usually check to make sure I have latest database. Saw the database was a few days old. When I went to update it wouldn't do it, gave me error code 0x80080005. I then tried to run windows update but it wouldn't work either, kept giving me errors. I tried Fixit 50202 like you did and got the same error message about not being an administrator. While doing my research found that to run windows update (which also controls MSE getting updates) on XP SP3 you need 5 services running (listed below). When I opened up services.msc and here is what I found: Automatic Updates was not started. BITS was started. COM+ Event System was started. CryptSvc was started. Event Log was started. When I checked the Automatic Update service noticed under Recovery tab that all failure retrys were set to "take no action". I changed them to "restart service". That did not fix the problem though, still got error 126. So you could skip that p

errors, there are a couple of ways you can try to fix the issue. If you are getting any of these errors, read on: Background intelligent transfer service did not start properly https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/8bd2198d-5dce-4167-9441-4cd0d287179c/windows-update-failures-error-126-when-starting-up-auto-updates-service?forum=itproxpsp Background intelligent transfer service will not start Background intelligent transfer service has stopped working If BITS can’t be started for some reason, first make sure it is enabled in the Services control panel applet. Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and click on Services. Make sure that Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to Automatic or Manual as the startup type. If http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/background-intelligent-transfer-service-will-not-start/ it’s not set to Manual or Automatic, then double-click on it and change the startup type to either one of these. If the service is configured correctly, but BITS will still not start up properly, check to make sure none of the dependent services are disabled. Again, go through the list of services and make sure all of the following are set to Automatic or Manual: Terminal Services, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions, COM+ Event System, DCOM Server Process Launcher If all of the services are correctly configured, you can try to delete and reset the download queue by deleting the following two files: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat Now try to start the BITS service by going to the command prompt and typing in net start bits. This will reset the BITS transfer queue and hopefully allow the service to start properly. If not, then continue reading! If you are running Windows Vista and you cannot start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, you can download the BITS Repair Tool to fix any problems corrupted BITS files. Update 126 error Discussion in 'Software' started by Brightstar, Aug 13, 2011. Brightstar Private E-2 I've had a problem with svchost.exe that was preventing me from booting up Windows XP normally. Couple this http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/windows-update-126-error.242417/ with malware infection and I've only been able to access windows via safe mode. After going through the malware protocols https://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/198282-Automatic-Updates-Service-not-working-I-am-out-of-ideas and postings the machine has apparently been cleaned of the malware (see: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1655034#post1655034 ), and I've finally been able to boot up windows normally. However, I'm still having an issue with Automatic Updates -- they are unable background intelligent to be started. I get the error message 126 when trying to turn on automatic updates via services.msc BITS via services.msc is started. Via web updater I get a message similar to this: "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem" But background intelligent transfer I'm unable to proceed beyond this. If anyone has any suggestions on what I might be able to do to correct this error it would be greatly appreciated.
