Excel Cannot Access the File Posted 1532 days ago by Ray Lei If you ever use Office Automation there is a couple of steps you need to perform, before you can get everything working. I recently re-imaged my developer workstation and when I tried to run one of the asp.net 4.0 web applications in IIS, I received the following error from the Excel Automation function: Microsoft Excel cannot access the file ‘C:\Users\Directory\Template.xlsx'. There are several possible reasons: • The file name or path does not exist. • The file is being used by another program. • The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook. The function opened an excel document for modifications, but it failed and provided the above error message. I've typically encountered this error message because I didn't provide Excel launch access to my application pool identity and also didn't create a required folder in the system directory. Thus, to remedy the situation, I did the following: Determine your application pool identity: Open IIS Navigate to Applications Pools In the right pane, there should be a list application pools. Find the one your application is using. Right-click on the application pool and select Advanced Settings… Under the Process Model grouping, you'll see the Identity property It is probably set to ApplicationPoolIdentity, but I typically change it to NetworkService or a custom account Now we have the application pool identity (Network Service), we need to provide it access to the folder which Excel is reading/writing to. Add folder permissions to the application pool identity: Find the parent folder in your directory structure, which excel is reading/writing to Right-click on it and select Properties Under the Security tab, click on the Edit… button Add the identity (in my case, Network Service) to the security permissions and give it full permissions or modify, read, etc… Click OK and OK again to finish Provide the application pool identity, the ability to launch excel: Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Component Services In this window, expand the tree to Component Services > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config In the DCOM Config left/center pane, you should see a list of items Find the item that says Microsoft Excel Application Right-click on it and select Properties Navigate to the Security tab Under the Launch and Activation Permissions,
